I checked in today on the NASA homepage for the Mars Rover project. I’d completely forgotten about the two robots grinding their way around Mars. It would appear that both Rovers are still going strong, more or less.
What was supposed to be a 90 day Mars exploration, back in July of 2003, has turned out to be a 3 year long technological miracle. The Rover named Spirit has crept a total of 4.25 miles (6.836 km) in that period of time. It is damaged, and hobbling along on 5 wheel drive, but Spirit is demonstrating incredible "spirit" and refusing to die. Sister robot Opportunity has traveled 4.29 miles, and is still going strong.
The initial media fuss over the Rovers has died, but the NASA team keeps photographing, and taking measurements, and coming up with innovative ways of keeping the wonder-machines going.
