The recent death of four Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan must leave many of us wondering what is worth fighting for. We hear generals and politicians all to often speak of keeping Afghanistan from falling back to where it was; a haven for terrorists. But, we hear a different story come from the troops themselves. A common theme among soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq is that they are compelled to fight and sacrifice for the indigenous people. Endless tales of our warriors being motivated by the civilians of Afghanistan can be found. Troopers, again and again, are willing to get between civilians in far off lands and the thugs who would dominate them. While are generals and politicians talk of global anti-terror strategy, the boots on the ground talk of killing bad guys in order to protect the hapless civilians of war-torn lands. In other words, they talk the talk of every super-hero comic strip, and they walk the walk as well.
The left likes to set itself up as the international defender of human rights; the champion of the downtrodden; the hero of the dispossessed. Yet, when push comes to shove in a nasty world, it would appear that only touchy-feely actions are good enough for the left. And, when it comes to actually defending victims of violence by getting between them and their oppressors, the left is as squeamish as Bardot at a seal hunt. The refusal of the left in both the United States and Canada to lend complete and total support to the mission in Afghanistan is the perfect example of leftist ideology having lost its way.
Without security, humanitarian work in Afghanistan is impossible. Without democracy, even the crude Afghan kind, freedom is just a dream. Without our troops taking the fight aggressively to the Taliban, Afghanistan will fail. Yet, leftists dither.
Perhaps the greatest proof of the nobility of our cause in Afghanistan is the fact that Afghans are pouring back into their homeland. Even those who could stay in the safety of western nations are choosing by the thousands to return and rebuild their homeland. They are voting in favor of our effort with their feet. They are voting in favor of our effort by joining the Afghan army. They are voting in favor of our effort by sending funds, material goods, and themselves back into the fray. They are voting in favor of the security and hope our warriors have brought them. What more proof do the leftists want?
