2009: The Year the MSM Died

In 2009 the Main Stream Media came out of the closet ... it showed us that 90% of all journalists are "progressive" dimwits who use their positions to further their view of the world. From slavish worship of Barack Obama to ignoring Climategate, the media has shown itself to be little more than a mouth-piece for the progressive class.

The picture at left is brought to you via the "new" media. It captures events that are as profound as those that occurred in 1968 Prague ... yet, there is hardly a fucking blurp about these events in the MSM. (click image for video)

You'll find that on this blog we've savaged journalists in general ever since we started ... and in 2009 we were proven right. A pox on all journalists ... except those who are dedicated to bringing us the news, free of their own personal biases, free of what has become the progressive filter, free of NOT REPORTING that which doesn't fit the progressive trajectory.

Journalists may not know it yet, but in 2009 their industry all but died. No longer ... ever ... will the peoples of the world consider any news "trusted". But that's a good thing, because any sane and informed person will from now on dig for information on their own and sift out nuggets of truth from the guano that passes as news on the networks and broadsheets.

It's been a wonderful year in that sense ... it's the year the MSM died as the dominant force in shaping public opinion.

Cheers All!

How to Lose a War

Surely, Islamists must think that Westerners were made to be dominated:

The US has released the leader of an Iranian-backed Shia terror group behind the kidnapping and murder of five US soldiers in Karbala in January 2007.

Qais Qazali, the leader of the Asaib al Haq or the League of the Righteous, was set free by the US military and transferred to Iraqi custody in exchange for the release of British hostage Peter Moore, US military officers and intelligence officials told The Long War Journal. The US military directly implicated Qais in the kidnapping and murder of five US soldiers in Karbala in January 2007.

“We let a very dangerous man go, a man whose hands are stained with US and Iraqi blood,” a military officer said. “We are going to pay for this in the future.”

The US military has maintained that the release of members and leaders of the League of the Righteous is related to a reconciliation agreement between the terror group and the Iraqi government, but some US military officers disagree.

“The official line is the release of Qazali is about reconciliation, but in reality this was a prisoner swap,” a military intelligence official said.

Moore and four members of his personal bodyguard were kidnapped at the Finance Ministry in Baghdad in May 2007 by a group that calls itself the Islamic Shia Resistance, which is in fact a front for the League of the Righteous. The group had always insisted that Qais, his brother Laith, and other members of the Asaib al Haq be released in exchange for Moore and the others. Three of Moore’s bodyguards were executed while in custody, and the fourth is thought to have been murdered as well.

“This was a deal signed and sealed in British and American blood,” a US military officer told The Long War Journal. “We freed all of their leaders and operatives; they [the League of the Righteous] executed their hostages and sent them back in body bags. And we’re supposed to be happy about it.”

As of mid-October, the US had released more than 100 members of the League of the Righteous. The US has also released several senior Qods Force officers, including Mahmud Farhadi, the leader of the Zafr Command, one of three units subordinate to the Qods Force's Ramazan Corps. Farhadi was among five Iranians turned over to the Iraqi government and then subsequently turned over to the Iranians in July.

The US has released the Iranian operatives and proxies despite rising tensions between Iran and Iran. Iran is currently occupying Iraqi oil wells in Maysan province. Shia terror groups backed by Iran remain active in Iraq, and the Iraqi security forces continue to round up members of the Hezbollah Brigades, the Mahdi Army, the Promised Day Brigade, and the Special Groups. Iraqi security forces are also actively hunting for Qods Force agents who have entered Iraq.

"But then, there is the "progressive" class ... that aimless mass of Western humanity so burdened by cultural self-loathing that it is to Islam, as ungulates are to lions."

Climategate and the Limp CPC Response

Climate change fanatics the world over are doing all they can to reduce the CRU data and email leak into little more than an unfortunate distraction. We'll know in a few years if they are successful (which I doubt).

The following "long" read breaks down the leak into important components and makes it clear why the leak is a spear thrust right to the heart of the IPCC and the global warming frenzy.

I'm so convinced that the IPCC position is fraud, in fact, that I consider Stephen Harper and the CPC grossly negligent and traitorous if they don't stop voicing support for the global warming farce ASAP. Harper and Co. are heading down a dangerous path, and now that they have been handed the "gift" of the CRU leaks, they have no excuse in continuing to give verbal support to the IPCC line.

It's time for Harper and Co. to take a strong neutral stand ... and to make that stand public.

To my conservative friends who so blindly and slavishly support Harper and Co. I say ... if Stephen Harper's actions had been those of Paul Martin, you'd be screaming blue murder. I expect strong, clear, and honest leadership from my PM ... why don't you? I expect my PM to openly and clearly defend my country from transnational interests, why don't you?

Or, is it that Harper and Co. have been got to by the Carbon Trading industry ... that'd include Canadian Banks, Oil Giants, and Hedge Funds, and that the CPC are just as excited about the potential profits as are Dr. Pachauri, Al Gore, Mo Strong, Soros, and Hank Paulson?

I ask my conservative friends ... are you sure you aren't being bent over? Once you fully grasp how much money is involved in the global warming fraud and who the players are, you'll start to wonder.

The Summer that Wasn't

The "weather" is warning us ... don't fear the heat; fear the cold.

CTV:

Environment Canada says the abnormally cold and wet summer the majority of Canadians lamented about for months is the top weather story of the year.

"The big talk from Atlantic (Canada) to Alberta was 'where's the heat?'' and every conspiracy going was blamed for the summer that wasn't, here in Canada," Environment Canada Senior Climatologist Dave Phillips said on Wednesday at a news conference in Toronto.

"Too much heat in the far west, and not enough for all the rest," he said.
... I wonder how many of those grumbling Canucks believe that global warming is a problem?

Behold the Peace of Islam

Words defy:

A seven-year-old Pakistani girl and her family have been given asylum in Canada after reports the child was raped and left to die when her Christian father refused to convert to Islam.

The identities of Baby Neeha and her family are being protected by immigration officials, said human rights lawyer Chantal Desloges and One Free World International, a church that was instrumental in getting the family here.

... but according to "progressives", it's Christian extremists you've got to keep an eye on.

The Picture that Gives Hope to the Jihad

Beware the Coming Cold

image: Warm or cold? An easy choice.

Could Mother Nature be firing a warning shot?

WUWT:
What is facing the major population centers of the northern hemisphere is unlike anything that we have seen since the global warming debate got to the absurd level it is now, which essentially has been there is no doubt about all this. For cold of a variety not seen in over 25 years in a large scale is about to engulf the major energy consuming areas of the northern Hemisphere. The first 15 days of the opening of the New Year will be the coldest, population weighted, north of 30 north world wide in over 25 years in my opinion.
Perhaps one day it'll sink into the thick skulls of greens, those ordinary people who follow the every utterance of Gore, Suzuki and the WWF with raptured awe, that a cold planet is to be feared far more than a warm one.

Playing with Climate Forecasts

Roger Pielke Jr. takes Real Climate (Warming Bible Blog) to task for its defense of methodology used in making climate predictions:

Over at Real Climate there is a misleading post up about IPCC global temperature projections as compared with actual temperature observations, suggesting success where caution and uncertainty is a more warranted conclusion.

The scientists at Real Climate explain that to compare a prediction with observations one must assess whether the observations fall within a range defined as 95% of model realizations. In other words, if you run a model, or a set of models, 100 times, you would take the average of the 100 runs and plot the 95 individual runs closest to that average, and define that range as an "envelope" of projections. If observations fall within this envelope, they you would declare the projection to be a predictive success.

Imagine if a weather forecaster said that he ran a model 100 times and it showed that tomorrow's temperature was going to be between 25 and 75 degrees, with 95% confidence, with a "best estimate" of 50 degrees. If the temperature came in at 30 degrees you might compare it to the "best estimate" and say that it was a pretty poor forecast. If the weather forecast explained that the temperature was perfectly "consistent with" his forecast, you'd probably look for another forecaster. If the true uncertainty was actually between 25 and 75 degrees, then one might question the use of issuing a "best estimate."

... read the whole thing and find out why just about any temperature trend will allow warmists to crow that their models work.

Understanding the Taliban and CF in Kandahar

From Brian Platt:

I cannot recommend this piece enough to anyone who wants to understand what has happened there since 2001. Even someone with little knowledge of Kandahar can understand it completely, and even someone like myself, who regularly reads reporting out of that province, will find plenty of new information. (Rolston, who worked there, understandably already knew most of what Forsberg had to say.)

Why News on Afghanistan is a Minefield

Reading news on Afghanistan is like digging through a garbage can looking for something edible ... most of what one gets is rubbish:

Murray Brewster of CP is one of the abler of our journalists covering military matters. But in this round-up and look-ahead piece about the CF in Afstan he manages not to mention the US Army's 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team that has been operating at Kandahar since late summer (that unit by itself is considerably larger than the whole Canadian contingent in the province). Mr Brewster refers to the Arghandab district but seems unaware that a battalion of the Stryker BCT is there now and taking heavy casualties.

All About Offsets; Not Climate

The more one digs into who is pushing the Global Warming hoax, and why they are doing it, the more one comes to the conclusion that it's all about money ... carbon credits, to be precise.

About the only thing "saved" in Copenhagen was the only thing that the powers behind the movement care about ... the carbon exchange.

Just ask Hank Paulson, Al Gore, and Goldman Sachs, who stand to make ship loads of cash just on commissions alone.

Copenhagen Crime Scene:
The city of Copenhagen 'is a crime scene tonight, with the guilty men and women fleeing to the airport'.

So said John Sauven of Greenpeace UK after the climate summit broke up. And he is right.

This is the biggest heist in history. As they poured carbon over snow-covered Denmark from their gas-guzzling jets, world leaders were congratulating themselves on securing a deal which will make their backers and financiers a trillion pounds a year.

A Heap of Fudge:
As fairy-tale snow gently descended on Copenhagen, the great global warming conference degenerated through pantomime, boredom, chaos and anger to its entirely predictable conclusion – a colossal pile of fudge with a very hard and nasty rock hidden at its centre. The "world summit" on climate change was never really going to be about saving the world from global warming at all. Even if the delegates had got all they wanted, it would no more have had any influence on emissions of CO2 – let alone on the world's climate – than the 1997 Kyoto Protocol before it.

Even the Climate Gods are in on it:
No one in the world exercised more influence on the events leading up to the Copenhagen conference on global warming than Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and mastermind of its latest report in 2007.

Although Dr Pachauri is often presented as a scientist (he was even once described by the BBC as “the world’s top climate scientist”), as a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics he has no qualifications in climate science at all.

What has also almost entirely escaped attention, however, is how Dr Pachauri has established an astonishing worldwide portfolio of business interests with bodies which have been investing billions of dollars in organisations dependent on the IPCC’s policy recommendations.

Beware the Cold

We've been crowing on this blog that global warming is child's play compared to global cooling. A cooling planet is guaranteed to spell death on a massive scale. Global Warming, on the other hand, has always spelled good times for all species ... in fact, in order for Global Warming to cause the calamity predicted by warmists, it'd have to behave differently than in the past.

Furthermore, how tragic that the loons ... and that includes the ordinary citizens that give Global Warming leadership its moral authority, have the entire creative power of humanity focussed on the global warming canard, when our planet may be giving us very clear early warnings of global cooling. What a pathetic farce it will be, if we should have been expending our efforts in preparing for shorter growing seasons and crushing winters, instead of suffering the arrogant preachings of the warming gods.

As I sit here and write this from the comfort of my home, protected by a modern structure, heated with carbon spewing natural gas, the minus 30C outside seems a mere inconvenience ... we'll get by in Canada, come cold or hot ... but any hiccup in our ability to produce surplus cereal crops will spell trouble for the world's poor ... any hiccup in Europe’s, China's, and America's ability to produce massive surpluses will spell suffering on a scale hard to fathom. The day may come when all of humanity will be wishing that the global warming fanatics had been right.

For now, northern hemispheric cold snaps can be brushed off as weather, but if and when northern growing seasons begin to shorten, all bets will be off. All it'll take is one northern hemispheric summer "cold snap" to plunge the world into chaos. Cold, is that dangerous.

Must See: The Climategate Flow-Chart

Incredible ... putting the whole affair in a format that even a journalist could understand ... click.

Jo Nova:

You have to see this to believe it. Look up close and admire the detail while you despair at how long science has been going off the rails. To better appreciate the past and what was exposed by the CRU emails, the time-line chart consolidates and chronologically organizes the information uncovered and published about the CRU emails by many researchers along with some related contextual events. That the chart exists at all is yet another example of how skilled experts are flocking in to the skeptics position and dedicating hours of time pro bono because they are passionately motivated to fight against those who try to deceive us.

(no insult meant, of course, to those few journalists who still govern themselves by the principles of unbiased reporting and good solid fact-checking)

Why Global Warming Science was Doomed from the Start

The canary in the coal mine right from the start was the fact that political considerations and profit were a driving force behind global warming science ... and in that, the science was destined to become corrupt and to lose it's aversion to secracy and outright lies. As a result, those scientists who "believe" in AGW have become more politician than scientist, more activist that dispassionate researcher, more money counter than data counter, more fraudster than honest advocate ... and all because they took their marching orders from corrupt politicians and billionaires who were willing to shovel massive quantities of money into a scientific discipline ... as long as the results helped "push the process in the right direction".

Hans Von Storch on Good Science:

We—society and climate researchers—need to discuss now what constitutes "good science." Some think good science is a societal institution that produces results that serve an ideology. Take, for instance, the counsel that then-Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen gave to scientists at a climate change conference in March, as transcribed by Environmental Research Letters: "I would give you the piece of advice, not to provide us with too many moving targets, because it is already a very, very complicated process. And I need your assistance to push this process in the right direction, and in that respect, I need fixed targets and certain figures, and not too many considerations on uncertainty and risk and things like that."
In the UK, bloggers and a few journalists are waking up to another sickening fact about "the science" ... AGW has been driven by one motive in the end, and one motive alone ... profit.

The following are some fascinating reads from EU Referendum, where the blood hounds of that blog are onto the scent ... and it ain't pretty:

50 Years of Cold on the Way

... or so says this report, which also neutralizes the standard warmist line that CO2 is the global warming culprit:

Cosmic rays and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), both already implicated in depleting the Earth’s ozone layer, are also responsible for changes in the global climate, a University of Waterloo scientist reports in a new peer-reviewed paper.

In his paper, Qing-Bin Lu, a professor of physics and astronomy, shows how CFCs - compounds once widely used as refrigerants - and cosmic rays - energy particles originating in outer space - are mostly to blame for climate change, rather than carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. His paper, derived from observations of satellite, ground-based and balloon measurements as well as an innovative use of an established mechanism, was published online in the prestigious journal Physics Reports.

”My findings do not agree with the climate models that conventionally thought that greenhouse gases, mainly CO2, are the major culprits for the global warming seen in the late 20th century,” Lu said. “Instead, the observed data show that CFCs conspiring with cosmic rays most likely caused both the Antarctic ozone hole and global warming....”

In his research, Lu discovers that while there was global warming from 1950 to 2000, there has been global cooling since 2002. The cooling trend will continue for the next 50 years, according to his new research observations.

Time will tell whether or not we are on the verge of a major cooling trend, let's hope not.

Afghanistan: We Told You So

Just as we thought, the Great American Sea-Change is at hand:

Bolstered by thousands of American troops, Canada's top general in Afghanistan is predicting the Taliban will be marginalized from most of Kandahar's population by the time the Canadian military mission ends in 2011.

Brig.-Gen. Daniel Menard said that with more than 5,000 Canadian and U.S. soldiers under his command [actually there are a fair number from our Air Force, and some from the Navy too], coalition forces will be able to hold areas in the violent province far more effectively than in recent years.

Medical Emergency: Greens in Need of Prep H

I have a friendly question for my "green" friends ... how badly do you have to get bent over before it hurts enough that you have second thoughts? Really ... I'm curious:

Not only has Dr R K Pachauri, chairman of the UN's IPCC been developing a very significant portfolio of private interests, evidence is mounting that he has been carrying out his business activities for these organisations under the guise of his UN duties, and charging the expenses to the UN.

This has emerged in part from an official document published by the IPCC Secretariat late August 2008 in response to public questions about Pachauri's "carbon footprint" arising from his globe-trotting activities.

Under the title "Outreach activities carried out by the IPCC Chairman", covering his itinerary for January 2007 to July 2008, the main purpose was to reassure the public that, while engaged on UN activities had indeed flown many miles, in each case the UN had paid "carbon offsets" for the flights – details of which were listed against each "official" engagement.

More Peer Review Corruption

I've been putting out a challenge for some time now to our trolls ... the ones who used to use "peer review" as the gold standard of what was admissible and what wasn't, when it came to discussions on the science of Global Warming. I've challenged them to come and defend the peer review process as practiced by the leading lights in the IPCC and as we've come to know it since climategate.

Strangely though, the trolls, and even more sanguine warmists, have been strangely silent ... choosing to lie low and drink the nectar at Real Climate or pass through on occasion to bark out the same old refrains ... as if climategate never happened, as if the mounting evidence that screams "bad science" and "green profiteering" never existed.

We offer you today another example of peer review skulduggery:

The CRU e-mails have revealed how the normal conventions of the peer review process appear to have been compromised by a team* of global warming scientists, with the willing cooperation of the editor of the International Journal of Climatology (IJC), Glenn McGregor. The team spent nearly a year preparing and publishing a paper that attempted to rebut a previously published paper in IJC by Douglass, Christy, Pearson, and Singer (DCPS). The DCPS paper, reviewed and accepted in the traditional manner, had shown that the IPCC models that predicted significant "global warming" in fact largely disagreed with the observational data.

We will let the reader judge whether this team effort, revealed in dozens of e-mails and taking nearly a year, involves inappropriate behavior, including (a) unusual cooperation between authors and editor, (b) misstatement of known facts, (c) character assassination, (d) avoidance of traditional scientific give-and-take, (e) using confidential information, (f) misrepresentation (or misunderstanding) of the scientific question posed by DCPS, (g) withholding data, and more.

*The team is a group of climate scientists who frequently collaborate and publish papers which often support the hypothesis of human-caused global warming. For this essay, the leading team members include Ben Santer, Phil Jones, Timothy Osborn, and Tom Wigley, with lesser roles for several others.

Why the IPCC Must Corrupt the Peer Review Process

Part of the AGW hoax is that those at the centre of the IPCC actively supress scientific work that doesn't fall in line with Global Warming alarmism; then, with shrill fanfare, they crow that "only" peer review work can seriously be considered in the AGW discussion.

Climate Audit gives us an example of why corrupting the peer review process is so vital for the IPCC; what some scientists have tried to get published is devastating to the IPCC cause:

Siberian temperatures are an interesting case study in CRU gatekeeping. As reported a few days ago here, in an email of Mar 31, 2004, Jones advised Climategate correspondent Michael Mann that he had “gone to town” in his rejection reviews of submissions criticizing CRU’s handling of Siberian temperatures. Today, in a Climate Audit exclusive, we provide you with the rejected paper
(by Lars Kamel), one which seems like it would have been a useful contribution to the peerreviewedlitchurchur.
... keep reading what the "gatekeepers" supress.

Climate that Kills

In the past, a warm climate meant the expansion of species and the most robust planetary ecosystem imaginable; while cold meant extinctions ... I wonder why?

The death toll continued to rise yesterday in Europe as the severe Arctic cold, blizzards and snowfalls kept a grip on the continent, causing major transport and energy disruptions.

From northern Europe to the Balkans, weather officials reported temperatures plunging overnight to as low as -30 degrees Celsius, while further snowfalls created havoc with rail services and left motorists stranded for hours on icy and snow-covered roads.

In Warsaw, police officials said 15 people froze to death on Saturday alone, bringing to 57 the number of people who have died in Poland from exposure to the severe weather since early December.

... just imagine if we actaully get a "littel ice age, C/O a sleepy sun ... any significant reduction in Northern Hemisphere cereal crops will cause death on a scale even the warmists haven't imagined. It's so ironic, that while the greens and carbon profiteers have the entire planet focussed on warming, the monster in the room may be Jack Frost.

Canada's Utterly Destroyed Reputation

It is truly sad to see how far Canada has sunk in the eyes of the world:

Last week, I went on a foot patrol through a built-up urban area of Kandahar with some Americans and Afghan police forces. This being my first patrol on foot, I was slightly edgy and careful of every step I took. Every bush I walked by I thought could potentially be a spot where someone could put a bomb.

After walking for about 10 minutes, I started to relax a little. Kids come up to you constantly to say hello in hopes that maybe you have something to give them. Two boys asked me if I had money, chocolate or candy. I shook my head and held out my hand to show them I didn't have any, but they still grabbed it and went through each one of my fingers to make sure.

I and the other Canadian on the patrol seemed to get the majority of the attention, possibly because we were dressed differently, but many of the Afghans driving by would yell "Canada!" out their car windows and wave or give us the thumbs-up. One kid ran by the police officer and the American in front of me to shake my hand."

... but what are a bunch of peasants compared to the statesmen of Eurabia, or better yet, Canadian liberal and socialist elite?

Because of the Colour of Their Skin

I've had some experience with Saskatchewan's attempts to bring aboriginals into the mainstream. Essentially, it consists of guaranteeing aboriginal spots in colleges and universities and includes lowering standards to get them in. Furthermore, government funding exists to the degree that the average aboriginal student has no concept, least of all desire, to ever pay for their own education. Paying for one's schooling is so beyond their experience they can't comprehend it.

I personally have aboriginal acquaintances who attend college sporadically and on a whim, while the state pays for childcare and their housing plus ridiculously large living allowances. They attend, for the freebies and have no desire to pursue any career in particular, least of all comprehend what that career would entail.

I'll take pause here to make it clear that I also have aboriginal acquaintances who have done well by the system ... have used tax payers money to get educated and have moved on from there into successful careers. But, I also have non-aboriginal acquaintances who have had to travel outside the province to get their education because the line for "whites" was years long as a result of aboriginal students que-jumping.

In their headlong rush to mainstream aboriginals the University of Saskatchewan, Federal Government, and Provincial government are demonstrating, perfectly, how to destroy professions and fill them with individuals with sub-standard skills who got to where they are purely because of the colour of their skin, not the content of their character:

The college continues its longtime pre-law summer program for aboriginal students. And although aboriginal students must still pass the LSAT exam, the college is allowed to be "flexible" on admissions for aboriginal students, he said.

The goal for the college is to have a ratio of aboriginal students that reflects Saskatchewan's population, he said. The college is receiving a steady number of applications in general, but fewer from aboriginal students, he said.

One reason may be the fierce competition among law colleges across Canada and other professions for talented aboriginal students. So the drop at the U of S may not be all bad news, Zlotkin said.

That said, the U of S "would like to have a lot of aboriginal law students" and will review the issue, he said.

[...]

Merasty graduated from the First Nations University of Canada with a social work degree, and worked in Buffalo Narrows and later Pelican Narrows for several years at the school and health centre.

Then she decided she could help more people with a law degree. She attended the U of S pre-law summer school, but failed the final exam. She took English courses online to improve her reading and writing and passed.

... how'd you like to rely on a First Nations University of Canada Social Worker ... stellar English skills and all.

It's nice to discover though, that where Saskatchewan goes, Manitoba goes bigger ... click.

Bush Was a Genius

... in comparison to the current clown-in-cheif:

The US president BO had hardly arrived when he let it be known, "the time for talk is over." From now on, he would take over the leadership of the negotiations.

Together with German Chancellor Merkel, the heads of Russia, Brazil, Japan, the EU and other prominent countries, Obama went to work. But things didn't go like the Nobel prize winner had imagined. Only German Environment minister Norber Roettgen remained optimistic. Despite the tough negotiation, he opined, there could be a resulting compromise. "Today we throw the dice."

Instead, it turned into a fiasco. [...]

According to rumors from the Bella Center, President BO is said to have asked for a conversation with Wen jibao to bring up the matters. But O had to wait. Wen, according to the rumors, almost never left his hotel room and could not be found. Finally the US Delegation succeeded in finding the chinese premier in a conference room. An obviously angry Obama is said to have stormed into the room. "Are you ready yet to talk with me Mr Premier?" he is said to have shouted. "Are you ready now? Mr Prmier, are you ready to talk with me?" What a stage entrance for a US President.

However, Wen was not alone in the room, as Obama literally burst in, according to members of the congress. The Chinese (premier) was in the middle of talks with India's head of state Mammohan Singh and the South African president Jacob Zuma. Suddenly the group found itself forced into a conversation with the US president.

This is what happens when America elects a man who was raised by an assortment of hippies, terrorists, sexual perverts, and a doting grandmother tossed in just to make sure he has about him a stunning sense of entitlement.

On a positive note, consider Obama a vaccine against electing ultra-left transnationals ... it'll be decades before America ever considers someone from the swamp again.

If You're Young and Fall for AGW ... You're a Sap

How irrelevant can a royal get?

About this irrelevant:

Prince Charles is so famously concerned about the environment that he’s known as the Green Prince. Just for the record, his annual carbon footprint is 2,601 tons. The carbon footprint of an average Briton (i.e., all those wasteful, consumerist, environmentally unsustainable deadbeats) is 11 tons. To get him to Copenhagen to deliver his speech, His Highness was flown in by one of the Royal Air Force’s fleet of VIP jets from the Royal Squadron. Total carbon emissions: 6.4 tons. In other words, the Green Prince used up seven months’ of an average Brit’s annual carbon footprint on one short flight to give one mediocre speech of alarmist boilerplate.

But relax, it’s all cool, because he offsets! According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the prince will be investing in exciting new green initiatives. “Investing” as in “using his own money,” you mean? Not exactly. Apparently, it will be taxpayers’ money. So he’ll “offset” the cost of using up seven months of an average peasant’s carbon footprint on one flight by taking the peasant’s money and tossing it down some sinkhole. No wonder he feels so virtuous. Oh, don’t worry, though. He does have to pay a personal penalty for the sin of flying by private jet: 70 pounds. Which is the cost of about six new trees, or rather less than the bill for parking at Heathrow would have been.

So just to recap: The Prince of Wales, a man who has never drawn his own curtains, ramps up a carbon footprint of 2,601 tons while telling us that Western capitalist excess is destroying the planet. Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the railroad engineer who heads the International Panel on Climate Change and has demanded that “hefty aviation taxes should be introduced to deter people from flying,” flew 443,226 miles on “IPCC business” in the year and a half before the Copenhagen summit. And Al Gore is a carbon billionaire: He makes more money buying offsets from himself than his dad did from investing in Occidental Petroleum.

[...]

If you’re young and you fall for this, you’re a sap. Indeed, you’re oozing so much sap the settled scientists should be measuring your tree rings.
If you have visions of Charles I dancing in your head, you can be foregiven.

Stunning News: Thermostat Found

Now this is hopeful news ... perhaps we deniers and capitalists may need to take another look at the work done in Copenhagen:

In breakthrough news today, The United Nations announced they had found The Global Thermostat to control the Earth’s temperature.

With 45,000 people searching for the controls in Copenhagen at the Bella Convention Center, commentators were shocked when it turned up instead in a closet in the basement of the World Meterological Organization (WMO) headquarters in Geneva.

“It’s a landmark day for human-kind” said Rajendra Pachuri, Chairman of the IPCC.

Barack Obama stood for a standing ovation that lasted 23 minutes and said: “It gives us all hope”.

Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia: “We wouldn’t have found this without Obama’s magic touch. Obama rolled up his sleeves in Copenhagen, and the ancient Sumerian map fell out of his shirt.”

Tim Flannery, an Australian environmental spokesman, said: We must make sure this thermostat does not fall into the wrong hands. It must be managed by an unelected, unaudited government with infinite powers. Nothing else is safe.

Pachuri went on to explain the degree of control the IPCC expected to be able to have:

Build Me a Bridge

The Magnificant Bastard Strikes Again

This time he goes after the rent seekers:

"Politicians and their fellow travelers, the media and the business community, simply understood that this is a very good topic to take on. It's an excellent idea to escape from the current reality. Not to solve the crisis, but to talk about the world in 2050, 2080, 2200. This is for them an excellent job. They will not be punished by the voters for making a totally wrong decision, a wrong forecast."

Klaus says that many interested parties get "a lot of money and influence" by backing the idea of global warming and organizing the Copenhagen conference, as well as its predecessor the Kyoto conference. "Some of them are really just rent seekers who hope to get some money either for their businesses or for their countries," says Klaus. "Some of them are really true believers."

Buffoons in Green

If one steps back and simply observes Copenhagen with the disinterested eye of the casual observer, one doesn't know whether to recoil in disgust or double over in laughter:

But boy! Was this crass, or what? The apocalyptic document revealing that even if the Western leaders hand over all the climate Danegeld demanded of them, appropriately at the venue of Copenhagen, the earth will still fry on a 3C temperature rise is the latest transparent scare tactic to extort more cash from taxpayers. The danger of this ploy, of course, is that people might say “If we are going to be chargrilled anyway, what is the point of handing over billions – better to get some serious conspicuous consumption in before the ski slopes turn into saunas.”

Ah Yes, the Intrepid Mr. Colvin

Glavin gives us an interesting slice of reality, one in which nuance, opinion, and now historic facts mix into an uncertain stew ... one in which only one man, a Mr. Colvin, believes he knows what the truth is. Unfortunately, he's staked his career on insisting that his "opinion" is right, much to the delight of the military haters on the left, and much to the ire of those who support the mission in Afghanistan.

One thing is for sure, this whole thing is become a snooze-fest, with only the far left yelping like wounded hounds in their desire to turn it into Canada's Abu Ghraib. Like their counterparts the world over, they care not one sniff for human rights, like those of the victims of the Taliban, and only come crawling out from under the floor boards if the so-called defence of human rights can in some way cast dispersion on the military or those who abide on the right hand side of the aisle. Had the cockroaches on the left been braying with equal magnitude every time the Taliban murdered and tortured civilians, they might have earned a few credibility points.

As for me, I don't give a damn for either side in this debate. Both use the Canadian military for either a prop to score political points, or as a punching bag. The left oozes hate while the right will drop the military like a hot spud the moment it costs them votes in Quebec or the GTA. I find them all reprehensible, from Harper to Layton, when it comes to Canada's Forces.

Glavin:

As I noted here, Richard Colvin has quite clearly insinuated that his one-time boss, Arif Lalani, Canada's former ambassador to Afghanistan, is both a coward and a liar. Turns out there is rather more going on here (or less, if you like) than that, and I suspect it betrays a lot about this preposterous affair that will, sadly, take a lot of the fun out of it too.

In his most recent instalment, Colvin claimed that Lalani had been instructed by Ottawa to withhold information, "however accurate, that conflicted with the government's public messaging," and consequently Lalani reversed the intent of an embassy report in order to give its opposite meaning: the report initially referred to a deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, but Lalani changed the report to read that "security was improving."

Colvin cites this alleged incident to refute Ottawa's claim that it "encouraged accurate, rigorous, fact-based reporting" from Kabul and wasn't interested in "opinion" or "non-fact based information." This is "not correct," Colvin states, and then he goes on to reiterate the claim that the security situation in Afghanistan was actually getting worse, which was what the Afghan Minister of Defence thought, and which was also "a view shared by our allies, and corroborated by violence trends and other metrics." Colvin adds that in September, 2007, a Canadian embassy staffer was "severely rebuked" in writing for merely stating what Colvin presents as the overwhelming, evidence-based consensus that things were getting worse, not better.

It looks terrible, doesn't it?

Rule Number One: Follow the Money

... always follow the money:

Abyd Karmali, global head of carbon markets for Merrill Lynch, says the markets will be watching the slugfest to see whether Europe commits to deepening its emission cuts from 20 to 30 percent by 2020. This could increase demand for tradeable carbon allowances, reports The Daily Telegraph.

And this, of course, is the same Meryll Lynch that employs Adair Turner as its Vice Chairman for its European operation, the man who is also a trustee of WWF UK and an enthusiastic member of the International Climate Change Taskforce set up by the Labour Institute for Public Policy Research think-tank, co-chaired by Labour MP Stephen Byers.

And it will come as absolutely no surprise to readers to learn that the Taskforce's scientific adviser is a certain Dr Rajendra K Pachauri. I wonder if he gets paid for that as well?

Lots of Pepper Spray Left for the Greens

... now that the money handlers have got what they wanted:

Despite the brave words Wednesday about holding out until the summer for a better deal, it looks as if the world's leaders are going all-out for a headline-grabbing agreement at the slugfest, determined not to leave Copenhagen until "the deal is sealed" – in the current vernacular.

Twelve figure numbers were floating around all yesterday, either a hundred billion dollars or euros depending on who you listened to, with increasingly wild emission cut figures proffered.

The reality, however, was broken by the New York Times which "leaked" (no scruples here, unlike certain e-mails) a draft UN document which purported to show that even if all the highest promises on emission cuts were kept, the temperature would still go screaming up to 3°c above the baseline – whatever that is – risking, according to the warmists, "runaway global warming".

[...]

As for saving the planet, well no-one really believes that greenie shit anyway ... except the greenies, and they don't matter. There is plenty of pepper spray left and no shortage of temporary detention space. Now that the money men have got what they came for, all the rest is theatre.

Don't you find it so ironic, that while the greens have been screaming about big oil and capitalism being the roots of "climate denial", it has been, infact, pure greed and the pursuit of profits that is driving the warmist agenda.

The New Colour of Being Green

More Peer Review

... the climate alarmist way:

In yesterday’s post, I showed that the Climategate letters showed gatekeeping incidents that had nothing to do with McIntyre and McKitrick – even preceding our entry onto the scene. In today’s post, I’m going to place the money quote in context, showing that Jones and Trenberth did in fact live up to their threats, breaching other IPCC rules along the way.
First of all, contrary to the statement by Prinn (and others), the paper being threatened was not a McIntyre and McKitrick paper; it was Michaels and McKitrick (Climate Research 2004). Citation of McIntyre and McKitrick papers in the paleoclimate chapter obviously had nothing whatever to do with Jones’ threats about the handling of the Michaels and McKitrick paper in the observation chapter edited by Kevin Trenberth and himself (“Kevin and I”).

The Michaels and McKitrick paper was originally submitted to International Journal of Climatology in May 2004 and was then assigned to Andrew Comrie of the University of Arizona. Comrie sought a review from the omnipresent Phil Jones (and apparently two others). The submission was rejected.

Michaels and McKitrick resubmitted the paper to Climate Research, where it was accepted. See these emails here here

Contrary to the spin of Prinn and others, it is a matter of fact that Trenberth and Jones kept Michaels and McKitrick (2004) out of the AR4 First Draft. (I searched and confirmed this.) As an IPCC peer reviewer, McKitrick and another reviewer (Vincent Grey) vigorously objected to the exclusion.

Trenberth and Jones flatly rejected their comments. The following is one example. Consult the AR4 First Order Draft Review Comments for others.

I can't help but recall the endless arrogant snobbery of leftist blog crawlers who mocked various "deniers" for their lack of "peer review" material ... or who quoted, with great indignation, the "peer review literature" that proved that AGW was a fact, and that those of us who disagreed were just shills for big oil ... or worse yet, heartless capitalists who didn't care for real science.

My, how things change.

For about the 10,000th time I'll say it ... science always wins ... and ever since the CRU leaks, science has been on an incredible winning streak.

The World's True Feminists

Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan - Several hundred women, many holding aloft pictures of relatives killed by drug lords or Taliban militants, held a loud but nonviolent street protest today, demanding that President Hamid Karzai purge from his government anyone connected to corruption, war crimes or the Taliban.

"These women are being very brave," said the protest leader, her face hidden by a burka. "To be a woman in Afghanistan and an activist can mean death. We want justice for our loved ones!"

Afghan police, in riot gear, monitored the rally as it worked its way slowly through muddy streets to the United Nations building here, but they did nothing to disrupt the event.

Like the Liberals Before Them

It would appear that once again the Canadian Forces will be getting the shaft c/o our politicians in Ottawa. With Canada contributing one of the smallest portions as a percentage GDP to military spending, in comparison to our NATO partners, it comes as no surprise that the Quebec and GTA vote whores in the CPC find little value in a robust military. Quebec and GTA voters are hopeless pacifists who hate all things military (unless of course it's Quebec arms industry contracts).

Harper came into power giving stirring speeches in KAF about not quitting, but once he realized that the military and Afghanistan were a chain around his neck when it comes to Quebec and GTA votes, he started putting distance between the CPC and the military; and especially Afghanistan.

If things go as I suspect, the CF will once again become a ragtag force running on yesterday's castoffs ... only thing, this time we won't be able to blame the big bad Liberals:
DND vehicle purchase hits speed bump
With Afghan pullout soon, military brass, bureaucrats dispute need for multibillion-dollar project

Five months after Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced a multibillion-dollar project to buy new armoured vehicles, the program has run into trouble as government officials start questioning the value of the purchase as the 2011 troop pullout from Afghanistan nears.

Military officers privately acknowledge the Defence Department's program to buy more than 100 close combat vehicles (CCVs) has fallen about a year behind schedule and there are concerns within the Canadian Forces the project might be scuttled [the CCVs are in fact one part of a broader program to upgrade armoured vehicles].

In addition, a Dec. 2 letter from Public Works, obtained by the Citizen, confirms the timetable for the program has slipped at least six months...

Calling All Left-bots

Where oh where have the leftist green-slimed blog crawlers gone ... I miss their lectures about "peer review":
1.For guys who supposedly represent the consensus science of tens of thousands of scientists, these guys sure have a bunker mentality

2.I would love an explanation of how math can have theoretical deficiencies but be better in a practical sense. In the practical sense of … giving the answer one wants?

3.The general whitewash answer to all the FOIA obstructionism is that these are scientists doing important work not to be bothered by nutcases trying to waste their time. But here is exactly the hypocrisy: The email author says that some third party’s study is deficient because he can’t demonstrate how his mathematical approach might change the answer the hockey team is getting. But no third party can do this because the hockey team won’t release the data needed for replication. This kind of data - to check the mathematical methodologies behind the hockey stick regressions - is exactly what Steve McIntyre et al have been trying to get. Ed Cook is explaining here, effectively, why release of this data is indeed important

4.At the very same time these guys are saying to the world not to listen to critics because they are not peer-reviewed, they are working as hard as they can back-channel to keep their critics out of peer-reviewed literature they control.

5.For years I have said that one problem with the hockey team is not just that the team is insular, but he reviewers of their work are the same guys doing the work. And now we see that these same guys are asked to review the critics of their work.
Context

Al Gore Has Competition

... for top spot as the world's biggest liar:

1. Pachauri asked us to believe that the IPCC’s documents were “peer-reviewed”. Then he revealed the truth by saying that it was the authors of the IPCC’s climate assessments who decided whether the reviewers’ comments were acceptable. That – whatever else it is – is not peer review.

2. Pachauri said that greenhouse gases had increased by 70% between 1970 and 2004. This figure was simply nonsense. I have seen this technique used time and again by climate liars. They insert an outrageous statement early in their presentations, see whether anyone reacts and, if no one reacts, they know they will get away with the rest of the lies. I did my best not to react. I wanted to hear, and write down, the rest of the lies.

3. Next came the bogus graph, which is featured three times, large and in full color, in the IPCC’s 2007 climate assessment report. The graph is bogus not only because it relies on the made-up data from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia but also because it is overlain by four separate trend-lines, each with a start-date carefully selected to give the entirely false impression that the rate of warming over the past 150 years has itself been accelerating, especially between 1975 and 1998. The truth, however – neatly obscured by an ingenious rescaling of the graph and the superimposition of the four bogus trend lines on it – is that from 1860-1880 and again from 1910-1940 the warming rate was exactly the same as the warming rate from 1975-1998.

Mr. Global Warming Himself

... has really long tentacles:

Seek and ye will find, as Bishop Hill notes. Our friendly part-time chairman of the IPCC, Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, is quite a remarkable man. As well as his onerous post with the UN's IPCC, it seems he has a considerable number of other interests.

Dr Pachauri's main day job is, of course, Director-General of The Energy Research Institute (TERI) - which he has held since April 2001, having become its Director and head in 1981 when it was the Tata Energy Research Institute.

Intriguingly, for such an upstanding public servant though, he is also a strategic advisor to the private equity investment firm Pegasus Capital Advisors LP, which he became in February of this year. However, this is by no means Dr Pachauri's only foray into the world of finance. In December 2007, be became a member of the Senior Advisory Board of Siderian ventures based in San Francisco.

CRU Dancing With the Czars

If the Russian government becomes fully engaged, this is going to get ugly:

A discussion of the November 2009 Climatic Research Unit e-mail hacking incident, referred to by some sources as "Climategate," continues against the backdrop of the abortive UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen (COP15) discussing alternative agreements to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol that aimed to combat global warming.

The incident involved an e-mail server used by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, East England. Unknown persons stole and anonymously disseminated thousands of e-mails and other documents dealing with the global-warming issue made over the course of 13 years.

Controversy arose after various allegations were made including that climate scientists colluded to withhold scientific evidence and manipulated data to make the case for global warming appear stronger than it is.

Climategate has already affected Russia. On Tuesday, the Moscow-based Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) issued a report claiming that the Hadley Center for Climate Change based at the headquarters of the British Meteorological Office in Exeter (Devon, England) had probably tampered with Russian-climate data.

The IEA believes that Russian meteorological-station data did not substantiate the anthropogenic global-warming theory.

Analysts say Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country's territory, and that the Hadley Center had used data submitted by only 25% of such stations in its reports.

Over 40% of Russian territory was not included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.

The data of stations located in areas not listed in the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature UK (HadCRUT) survey often does not show any substantial warming in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.

The HadCRUT database includes specific stations providing incomplete data and highlighting the global-warming process, rather than stations facilitating uninterrupted observations.

On the whole, climatologists use the incomplete findings of meteorological stations far more often than those providing complete observations.

IEA analysts say climatologists use the data of stations located in large populated centers that are influenced by the urban-warming effect more frequently than the correct data of remote stations.

The scale of global warming was exaggerated due to temperature distortions for Russia accounting for 12.5% of the world's land mass. The IEA said it was necessary to recalculate all global-temperature data in order to assess the scale of such exaggeration.

Global-temperature data will have to be modified if similar climate-date procedures have been used from other national data because the calculations used by COP15 analysts, including financial calculations, are based on HadCRUT research.

Thank God for American Lawyers

With any luck there will soon an army of predatory lawyers out to make names for themselves, and in doing so they won't leave any stones unturned, and any green not smeared from head to foot in guano. It's going to be ugly, but a more than likely a delight for those of us who have stuck to the facts:

God bless America and – can I really be saying this? – God bless the legal profession! Despite the best efforts of the Obama administration, most of the world’s other governments (save the plucky Canucks), the United Nations and the Mainstream Media (MSM) to sweep Climategate under the carpet, the lawyers are putting this shoddy scandal where it belongs: in the dock. (Hat tip: Platosays)

The US Department of Energy (DOE) – under pressure, most likely, from Senator Inhofe – has issued a “Litigation Hold Notice” to its various sub-departments asking them to retain any documents pertaining to the Climatic Research Unit at University of East Anglia. Below – reports Watts Up With That - is a copy of the notice sent to the DOE’s Savannah office in South Carolina:

Why Canadian Greens are Harebrained

I've been making the point, several times now, that Canadian greens in particular are harebrained. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I realize that any European, Northern Asian, or North American who is wailing about the dreaded human caused global warming must be shy a brick or two ... or at best, hopelessly deluded by their own ideological bent or inability to think rationally. Here's why.

The geographical regions of the Northern Hemisphere which have supported our Western way of life have been uninhabitable for most of the past 100 thousand years ... and prior to that for stretches that are much greater. In fact, my own country, Canada, exists where only tiny slivers of time during the last 100 years have allowed for flora and fauna to thrive robustly enough to support significant human activity.

The greater part of the last 100 thousand years have seen the Northern Hemisphere buried beneath ice sheets or miserably cool during summers. Agriculture, the bedrock of modern civilization, would be impossible on any large scale.

The greatest irony of all, perhaps, is that a great many equatorial regions which generally don’t suffer during ice ages, are host to the world’s most dysfunctional human systems, where bloated populations live in poverty and depend on Northern Hemispheric agricultural surpluses to feed them.

Imagine then, if the bounty of Chinese, Canadian, American, and European agricultural excess is cut off by a cooling climate. The death by starvation among the masses living in warm climates will be like nothing ever seen.

Yet, we find greens like Canada’s premier loons David Suzuki and Liz May bemoaning a warming climate, and we find walking lockstep with them a horde of enviro-dupes so full of cultural self-loathing and scientific ignorance that they’ve worked themselves into a state of fear over global warming; when in fact, nothing could be better for the planet than warmth.

The frozen hell that may await our species now that we are at the end of our 10 thousand year natural warm spell is the real stuff of nightmare. Imagine if 100 years hence Chinese food surpluses cease, Canada becomes a land largely devoid of agricultural production, European farms manage only to feed themselves, and the United States produces just enough food to cover shortfalls in Canada and Europe.

Hopefully though, the natural global warming we’ve been experiencing has some legs yet, and the greens can continue their brainless ranting. I’d rather suffer them, than the ice.

Glaciers Melting at Fastest Rate Ever

... in 1940s:

Drip by drip, like a glacier melting in the sun, the claim that man is changing the climate is dissolving into irrelevance. The recent findings of Swiss researchers expose another hole.

Former Vice President Al Gore has for years warned that man-made global warming is melting the world's glaciers — a tactic commonly used by alarmists who want to whip up hysteria. Swiss researchers, however, have presented evidence that weakens the argument.

Scientists at Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology have found that solar activity caused Alpine glaciers to melt in the 1940s at rates faster than today's pace, even though it's warmer now.

The study found that the sun in the 1940s was 8% stronger than average and far more powerful than it is today. It also concluded that solar activity was weaker from the 1950s to the 1980s, an era in which the glaciers advanced.

Watching a Suicide

... and a long past due one at that:

Climategate is a global household name. No cat has ever emancipated itself more completely from the bag. It is a world-wide scandal – thanks to the internet. Yet, as its ramifications proliferate and dominoes continue to fall, the most repeatedly asked question online is: how can the mainstream media ignore this? Well, we know the answer to that: the MSM are in thrall to the leftist consensus. End of story. But let me pose a follow-up question that may be becoming more imminently relevant.

Are the mainstream media capable of surviving their sidelining of the number one global scoop? Are they finally committing suicide? Are they, in fact, any longer mainstream? Every historian knows that any significant trend in society will show warning symptoms over a long period; but the final catastrophe will usually be triggered by a single event. For the moribund MSM that decisive blunder may well be Climategate.

Dirty Money Should be Rejected

Let's go Eastern Canada ... stand up for what is right and reject dirty money:

If Ontario and Quebec want out of a national emissions program, then perhaps the west should let them go. But then I think that turnabout is fair play, and the equalization program should be cut off for the eastern provinces. Five of the six provinces receiving equalization are in the east, which means western Canada’s energy-producing sector is providing the standard of living by which Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes are able to enjoy comparatively to the western provinces. If they don’t like the dirty Albertan oil getting in the way of their ambitious green plans, then I imagine they wouldn’t want the dirty money from it either.

Staring Down the Truth

The crooks are fighting back ... trying to stare down the truth. But really, what else is there for them to do?

The criminals at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) in England brazenly defend the indefensible. It is stunning to watch Michael Mann and Gavin Schmidt, who even look alike, staring directly at the camera and denying the significance of their emails.

It works because they used it to deceive the world. They know most won’t understand the emails. The Associate Press (AP) has already confirmed this.

As with Revkin at the New York Times the journalist Seth Borenstein of AP has no journalistic integrity. Here is his email to the gang. On July 23, 2009 he wrote, “Kevin, Gavin, Mike, It’s Seth again. Attached is a paper in JGR today that Marc Morano is hyping wildly. It’s in a legit journal. Watchya think?” “Again” means there is previous communication. A journalist talking to scientists is legitimate, but like the email’s tone and subjective comments are telling.

Head of IPCC Stands to Make a Fortune

Like they say ... follow the money ... always follow the money:

As reported by Reuters - with a slight correction: The head of the Asian Development Bank (ADP), Haruhiko Kuroda, warned governments that a failure to reach a climate deal in Copenhagen could lead to a collapse of the carbon market, which would hit efforts to deal with climate change make carbon traders very rich.

It helps of course to know that Mr Kuroda is best known in greenie circles for setting up the ADB Advisory Group on Climate Change – chaired by millionaire businessman Rajendra K. Pachauri, part-time chairman of the IPCC.

An interesting member of that Group is Dr Klaus Toepfer, Founding Director, Institute for Advanced Studies Climate, Earth System and Sustainability Sciences and former executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). And it was UNEP, of course, which set up the IPCC - which now has as its part-time chairman millionaire businessman Rajendra K. Pachauri.

One other member is professor Hironori Hamanaka, Chair, Board of Directors, Institute of Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). The IGES claims to be "a research institute that conducts pragmatic and innovative strategic policy research to support sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region." It will come as no surprise, therefore, to learn that the organisation works very closely with TERI, whose Director-General is millionaire businessman Rajendra K. Pachauri.

No longer, it seems, does Rome hold a pre-eminent position. In this brave new world of climate change and sustainable development, all roads lead to Rajendra K. Pachauri.

Green Pieces

Profile of a Skeptic

Canada's very own, Stephen McIntyre:

The private emails and logs leaked last month from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia can’t tell us whether industrial activity is really heating the earth’s atmosphere and endangering civilization. But they have settled the identity of the Great Satan of climate science. Torontonian Stephen McIntyre, a gentle, persistent amateur who had no credentials in applied science before stepping into the global warming debate in 2003, is mentioned more than 100 times.

In the emails, leading climate researchers dismiss him as a capitalist hireling or a hapless “bozo,” and argue about the relative merits of ignoring him versus counterattacking him, even as others acknowledge that his criticisms have merit and imitate his use of the Web as a venue for hyper-detailed scientific discussion. At one point in 2005, CRU director Phil Jones, now under suspension, ponders the possibility that McIntyre might use U.K. freedom-of-information laws to obtain raw weather-station data compiled by the CRU. He grumbles: “I think I’ll delete the file rather than send to anyone.” The overall impression is that of 100 elephants stampeding in confusion and panic around a mouse.

A U.N.-backed Congolese military operation to oust rebels from eastern Congo has caused more civilian casualties than damage to rebels, with more than 1,400 people deliberately killed over a nine-month period, human rights groups said Monday.

Human Rights Watch said it had documented "vicious and widespread" attacks against civilians by soldiers and rebels between January and September. Soldiers being fed and supplied with ammunition by the United Nations have killed civilians, gang-raped girls and cut the heads off some young men they accuse of being rebels or supporting the enemy, groups said.

"For every rebel combatant disarmed, one civilian has been killed, seven women and girls have been raped, six houses have been burned and destroyed and 900 people have been forced to flee their homes," British-based organization Oxfam said.

Little Cries in the Dark

With wind chills hitting -47C in Saskatoon last night, I was put in mind of an essay I wrote last year. It was in memory of two little native girls who were left to freeze in similar weather, out in a field, by their drunk father. The father saved himself, of course. I was overcome at the time by the bleeding hearts among the progressive class who wanted the father treated "gently" ... after all they said, one must walk in another's moccasins before one can cast stones. I was disgusted, because nobody was willing to walk in the moccasins of the two innocent little children.

I suggested at the time, on radio, that the "sentencing circle" that gave Potier (the father) a lenient sentence, be made to stand out in a dark field in -40C winds, in only their underwear ... that they be made to stand there until it sinks into their dark progressive brains exactly what two little girls went through ... and only after that, that they be allowed to deliberate. After all ... one must walk a mile in one's moccasins.

It’s a pitch black Saskatchewan winter night. The wind-whipped snow is as brittle as sand, driven by -50 degrees Celsius winds that blast the open field remorselessly. All nature is hunkered down, all nature waits out the tempest... all nature, except for two little girls floundering in the drifts.

Their cries are whipped away by the wind. The agonizing pain they feel as they flounder in the snow is shared by no one; they are entirely alone. The smallest, a 1 year old toddler dressed in only a diaper and t-shirt is too small to do more than scream as tiny children do when terrified and in pain. The older child, a 3 year old, crawls and struggles, utterly lost in the night. She manages to make it a short way. The cold wind cuts like fire as it buffets her tiny body. She wears panties and a T-shirt.

Freezing to death is never a pleasant thing, but at least some of those who do, do so while being surprised by hypothermia ... where their senses leave them and they cast off clothing and walk about, overcome by a sensation of being overheated. They feel no pain.

Not so for the two tiny souls abandoned in a Saskatchewan field. They’ve been plunged, alive and alert, into one of the most hostile environments on the planet. And worse ... even more cruel, is that their sense of abandonment ... their utter and total terror ... their complete sense of security has been stripped from them. They are truly alone ... with neither mother nor father nor kind person to stroke a forehead or hold a little hand. What they endure is torture, in every possible sense of the word.

Eventually, the cries turn to whimpers as burning skin becomes numb and tears turn to icicles. Little toes, hands, noses and ears freeze, but the core remains warm. Being little children, they are armed with that defensive reflex unique to small children, where the inner organs retain heat as long as possible ... little hearts keep beating. Eventually though, it’s not enough and the drifting snow covers two little girls, abandoned by their father, abandoned by their mother, and abandoned by their community.

Later, the father, a 24 year old drunk and petty criminal is charged. After wandering into the field, drunk, and dropping his daughters, he managed to crawl to safety. Despite being drunk, he saved himself.

After the usual legal proceedings he’s sent to an Indian Sentencing Circle, where the case is knocked around by the very community that raised the father. The “circle” recommends no jail time ... that the father work the rest of his life helping elders on the reserve constructing sweat lodges and preparing ceremonial pipes. He has, they say, suffered enough.

The good judge, charged with the case disagrees.

In what has become the perverted method of the liberal legal system, the judge carefully measures his options by putting the guilty father onto the post-modern scales of justice. On the one side of the scale is guilt ... on the other, is what we call victim status. The entire procedure is a matter of elevating the side of the scale called guilt by adding as many “victim” measures to the other side as can be found.

The father’s father was a drunk ... check. The father was a drunk ... check. He was drunk the day he murdered his daughters ... check. Already the guilt side of the scale is rising. The father apparently attended a residential school ... even though he is 24 years old and the old style schools have been closed for decades ... check. The father is a Canadian Indian ... check check check ... and the scale lurches upward. And so it goes, that with every possible victim classification known to “progressive” man adding its counterweight to the scale, the judge, all knowing, sees fit to give the killer 3 years in jail. After all, even the prosecutor suggested that two little lives were worth between 2 and a half and 5 years.

The result is that Indian victim status has been confirmed, in fact, anchored in place. Notions of personal responsibility have been pushed aside, and that vast class of oh-so superior human called the liberal has been made to feel good ... almost smug.

The reality of what it was like for two little girls to freeze to death; what it was like to visit hell on earth, remains unspoken and unexpressed. They have no justice. Their people have abandoned them in an orgy of delusional self pity so common among those who fall into any official victim class. It’s enough to cause those who live life by the rules of personal responsibility to wrench in disgust.

And the legal system ... judge, social workers, defence, and prosecution? They are part of that vast know-it-all class called the post-modern Liberal ... they sleep soundly at night knowing that they’ve managed once again to express nuance ... sophistication ... and have risen above the more pedestrian notions of justice and have recognized that we are not all equal, some being more victim than other. To them, punishment is vulgar and blasé.

And so it is, that two little voices crying out for rescue on a brutally cold Saskatchewan night go unheard. There is nobody ... not one single soul on this planet who will pay for the torture they endured. In what is truly a cruel twist, the self congratulatory and apparently erudite system that has denied them justice has proven itself to be nothing short of depraved as it focuses on “restoring” the torturer, and ignoring the little voices in the night.

Are Environmentalists Deranged?

image: Canada has been virtually uninhabitable on and off for 100,000 years.

In light of the following news item, I thought I'd repost an item I did a while back:

It always amuses me when individuals speak of a warmer planet in terms of death and destruction and suffering ... when any halfwit knows that a cold planet spells true misery and death on a massive scale. Even more ironic is when fellow Canadians speak in quivering tones of the horrors of a "warmer" planet when they have carved out a country on the northern fringes of human civilization ... truly, Western decadence must have infected their brains and caused a degree of retardation (hopefully temporary).

Thank your lucky stars to be alive on Earth at this time. Our planet is usually in a deep freeze. The last million years have cycled through Ice Ages that last about 100,000 years each, with warmer slivers of about 10,000 years in between.

We are in-betweeners, and just barely — we live in (gasp!) year 10,000 or so after the end of the last ice age. But for our good fortune, we might have been born in the next Ice Age.

Our luck is even better than that. Those 10,000-year warm spells aren’t all cosy-warm. They include brutal Little Ice Ages such as the 500-year-long Little Ice Age that started about 600 years ago. Fortunately, we weren’t around during its fiercest periods when Finland lost one-third of its population, Iceland half, and most of Canada became uninhabitable — even the Inuit fled. While the cold spells within the 10,000 year warm spells aren’t as brutal as a Little Ice Age, they can nevertheless make us huddle in gloom, such as the period in history from about 400 AD to 900 AD, which we know as the Dark Ages. We’ve lucked out twice, escaping the cold spells within the warm spells, making us inbetweeners within the inbetween periods. How good is that?

... more.

So reranged are greens, that it now appears almost certianly that they've had to fudge science in order to make the world fit their view ... now that, is sick.
