Redistribution of IQ

First they sought to redistribute wealth ... and now even IQ:

You have to assume this stuff actually works with moonbats. Imagine lacking the smarts to discern between communists building a wall to keep slaves in, and patriots building a wall to keep invaders out — or between liberal demigod FDR locking people up for their Japanese ancestry, and the great Joe Arpaio incarcerating criminals who break our laws.

Climate Claims are a Fool's Game

Claiming vindication for either global cooling or warming based on weather is a fool's game.

Droughts in one region cancel out unusual frost in others while pouring rains in one destroy previous predictions ... but even these are challenged by record breaking heat elsewhere.

No wonder warmists use an "all of the above" strategy as "proof" of AGW ... in a world that has constantly dished up weather catastrophe for millions of years, "all of the above" makes for accurate predictions at least somewhere at sometime. You can't miss.

Behold the Peace of Islam

Bubblegum and rainbow coloured gumdrops in the peaceful moderate land of Indonesia:
A US family accused of converting Muslims by giving them Christian baptisms has been forced to leave the Islamic Indonesian territory of Aceh.

Three Indonesians have also been arrested for assisting and the three alleged converts have been sent to a pesantran, an Islamic school, for re-education.

There is No Moderate Islam

... there is only Islam:

"Moderate" Indonesia:

A US family accused of converting Muslims by giving them Christian baptisms has been forced to leave the Islamic Indonesian territory of Aceh.

Three Indonesians have also been arrested for assisting and the three alleged converts have been sent to a pesantran, an Islamic school, for re-education.

Mullah Omar's Directive

Civilians become specific targets:

1. Fight coalition forces to the death without withdrawing or surrendering; attempt to capture coalition forces whenever possible.

2. Capture and kill any Afghan who is supporting and/or working for coalition forces or the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

3. Capture and kill any Afghan women who are helping or providing information to coalition forces.

4. Recruit anyone that has access to coalition force bases and have the ability to collect detailed information about coalition forces.

5. Purchase or obtain more heavy weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns and anti-aircraft machine guns.
... it's too bad that Canadian troops aren't going to be around to protect those civilians who sided with them over the past several years. Canada's army is coming home in order to appease Quebec ... after all, no Quebec vote, no Conservative wet dream parliament; or no Liberal one either. It stands to reason then, that since PM Harper and Iggy are both complete tools when it comes to inspiring, communicating, and moving public opinion, the default position is to simply acquiesce to Quebec pacifism.

Trouble in La La Land

I give bonus points for logic:
Elton John didn't mince words in slamming his fellow musicians for boycotting Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law. From the stage at his sold-out Tucson Arena concert Thursday night, John savored a few choice, not-so-family-friendly words:

"We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are (expletive)wits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the (expletive) with these people?"

John has never been one to cave into political pressure from his musical colleagues. He ignored an artist boycott of Israel in June over the flotilla fiasco and played a show in Tel Aviv. He also played Rush Limbaugh's latest wedding reception in early June, which drew the ire of gays and lesbians. Limbaugh is vehemently anti-gay marriage; John is married to his longtime partner David Furnish.

Anger and Disappointment

... at Canada's exit:
There is anger and disappointment, mixed with a sense of disbelief, among western supporters in Afghanistan’s second largest city over Canada’s decision to bring its troops home next summer.
"People are very upset about this. Why leave us?" said Jalani Hamayoun, the former deputy governor of Kandahar and a candidate in parliamentary elections in September. . .

- from an excellent story by Matthew Fisher, confirming what the Canada-Afghanistan Solidarity Committee has found (full report here):
... silly people, don't they realize that whoring for Quebec votes trumps everything ... EVERYTHING!

Is There a FOX in the Henhouse?

Not all things are as they seem:

But at the British end of the Murdoch empire, there have recently been signs that this is far from being the case. For the past two years, for instance, its television arm, Sky, has been teamed up with the world's richest enviromental lobby group WWF (income £400 million a year), in a bid to "help combat climate change" by saving the CO2-rich Amazon rainforest.

Then a few weeks back there was that curious episode when the Murdoch Sunday Times published a grovelling correction of a story familiar to reader of this blog which soon made headlines round the world as "Amazongate".

This was the scandalous story, first dug out by the tireless researches of Richard North, of how the IPCC's latest 2007 report had included a shock-horror claim that 40 percent of the Amazon rainforest was under threat from climate change. This had no scientific basis whatever. The only source given for this claim was a WWF propaganda sheet, which in turn had drawn its key sentence from the website of a small Brazilian environmental advocacy group set up by Dr Daniel Nepstad of the Woods Hole Research Center (in turn closely linked to the WWF).

[...]

Rather more shadowy still, however, are the Murdoch family's links with Bill Clinton's Climate Change Initiative. The head of strategy and communications for this influential and lavishly funded body is James Murdoch's wife Kathryn.

The "Climate Initiative" is in turn part of the William J. Clinton Foundation, fast-becoming one of the richest foundations in the world. It is supported to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars by the likes of Bill Gates of Microsoft. Thanks not least to its involvement with climate change, it likes to boast that it has recently been named as one of the world's "Top 10 Green NGOs".

Both Rupert Murdoch and his son are listed as among the Clinton Foundation's leading donors. Rupert, along with Barbra Streisand, was one of the three sponsors of a project to reduce the "carbon footprint" of 20 major cities.

Why the Progressives are Losing

... because they can no longer just fire their enemies:

Breitbart aimed to play the race card right back in the face of the racist NAACP. While the media was busy getting its knickers in a twist about out-of-context quotes, Breitbart had managed to make fools of both the NAACP and the Obama administration.

Or maybe it's just a coincidence that the Rasmussen Presidential Approval Index dipped to -20 over the weekend.

You can't hurt Andrew Breitbart by playing the "out-of-context" card, the one that leads into a demand to have the conservative racist fired. In the kind of ball that Breitbart plays, there is no appealing to the friendly umpire or the CEO who fears a call from the White House.

Breitbart is BigGovernment.com. He is BigJournalism.com, and BigHollywood.com, and BigPeace.com. He's not shilling for some Mr. Big, some right-wing George Soros.

Guess what, liberals. He can't be fired.

One Man's Witch Hunt

... is another man's oversight:
Speaking at the Netroots Nation conference, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., seemed terribly concerned about a Republican "witch hunt" if the GOP takes the majority in the House. "By 'witch hunt,'" notes Byron York, "Franken is referring to what Republicans call 'oversight.'"

The MSM: We versus Them

Journolist has made it clear, that many journalists view themselves as protectors of the progressive left ... the "we". That'd make everyone who's not a progressive, the "them." They feel they need to protect the tribe, and more often than not either lie, twist, or ignore the truth in order to fight for what is they see as right ... the progressive cause.

In the end the lesson is simple ... never ... never never never trust what a journalist says on any topic, no matter how mundane.

The Daily Caller just published a "heroes" list, a list of Journolisters who took a stand against the tribe ... if only periodically. What amazes me is that they even had to do so ... that expected behaviour comes out as heroic when dealing with that guano shovelling sleaze bag class of human called the journalist.

My apologies of course, to the few and far between who still have journalistic integrity ... but I wonder, how do function without getting any on you? How do you even get hired?

Non-believing Scientists Are Just Cranks

... how often have you heard that before ... or, the charge that they don't know what they are talking about because they aren't "climate scientists".

After all, what would a scientist from a trivial discipline such as physics know about thermal dynamics and atmospheric physics complexity.

Case in point, check out his bunch of losers: Freeman Dyson, Ivar Giaever, Robert Laughlin, Edward Teller, Frederick Seitz.

Or, how about his this Canadian? Damn physicists.

Behold the Peace of Islam

How Quaint:

A Jordanian man confessed to killing his 16-year-old niece to save his family's "honour" after she was sexually assaulted, a judicial official said today.
The 43-year-old fired 30 machine-gun rounds in the direction of the girl yesterday, killing her instantly, at Deir Alla, west of the capital Amman, said the official who requested anonymity.

The Moon is Made of Green Cheese

... it is ... honest:
If I stood up, in all seriousness, and said that the moon was made of green cheese, my readers – I hope – might look a little bit askance at me, and conclude, as many already have, that I have finally lost it.

Yet, when we get ministers making assertions of the same order of impossibility, it now seems that the role of the media is diligently to record such exudations ...

[...]

This time, it is that slime Huhne, a detestable example of a human being if ever there was one, a man who can actually state that onshore wind turbines are "incredibly competitive" in producing electricity, and have a newspaper print it, without the equivalent of a snort of derision.

The story is actually on the front page, but if you had journalists and editors worthy of their name (and pay), their front-page headline would be: "Minister claims offshore wind 'incredibly competitive'", with a list of worthies saying it isn't, the thrust of the story being that any energy minister who came out with such tosh is not fit for office.

Crushing Godwin

There is a cadre -- and it is huge -- of white people in this country who want to destroy anything that is not white. Currently it is being led by Glenn Beck, who is a killer at heart; we can only hope that he goes blind before he can cause even more damage!

Of course, we can only hope that Limbaugh would go deaf before he could cause damage; and look, we could only hope Dick Cheney would DIE before uh he could cause any more damage - but look! The potential for more chaos caused by Fox News and all of the, uh, scum working and pieces of waste like Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle and Breitbart is enormous!

Who Are You?

... I'm a Journolister:

Who are you? I'm a journalist. You don't get to learn what I'm all about. I'm a journalist, you don't get to know what I really think! I'm a journalist, you can't do an expose on me! This is my private account. How dare you report something that's on my private account?

I always love it when these people get a dose of their own medicine because they can't take it...She said it, she wrote it, she stood by it. Why apologize? Sarah, this is where you people just flummox me. You wrote it. You meant it. Stand by it. She apologizes to "anyone I may have offended and I regret these comments." She doesn't regret 'em, and she hasn't apologized to me. She just apologized to anybody she "may have offended," but why apologize in the first place? She's buckling to pressure. She meant to say it.

[...]

Everybody on that website, in that listserv, meant everything they wrote. It's just fascinating to see they don't have the guts to stand by it. So that's my reaction. If you want to know what I think about it, that's it..."That's not who I really am." You know, "That's not the person I am." Bull! It is who you are! You are a commie! You are a full-fledged Marxist liberal! You do wish I was dead. It is who you are.

[...]

What, did somebody steal your personality for a day and grab hold of your hands and start typing on your keyboard and it wasn't you? "This is not who I am. I want everybody to know, as a publicist I understand and this is not who I am." It is who you are! This is one of the big problems we have in this country: People don't have the guts to be who they are and stand up for who they are and admit what they really are, especially under fire. "Oh, that wasn't me. I don't know what happened there! We were just hanging around with a bunch of like-minded people and then you saw it, and that means 'that's not who I am.'" I bet the other people in this group are a little upset she's apologizing.

The Green Economy

... is as tried and failed as Socialism:
Renewable energy has proved an expensive and unreliable source of energy everywhere it has been tried on a significant scale. And now there is a big divide among the major European economies that have enthusiastically adopted wind, solar and the other renewables.

While the UK ploughs ahead by throwing good money after bad, Italy, Spain and Germany are cutting back on their taxpayer/ratepayer-funded generosity toward politically correct energies. France, meanwhile, with its abundant nuclear power, has smartly stayed out of the game.

DAWA

... at Ground Zero:

Both ISNA and IIIT have been up to their necks in the promotion of Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood’s ruthless Palestinian branch, which is pledged by charter to the destruction of Israel. In fact, both ISNA and IIIT were cited by the Justice Department as unindicted co-conspirators in a crucial terrorism-financing case involving the channeling of tens of millions of dollars to Hamas through an outfit called the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. For the last 15 years, Hamas has been a designated terrorist organization under U.S. law.

Dawa, whether done from the rubble of the World Trade Center or elsewhere, is the missionary work by which Islam is spread. As explained in my recent book, The Grand Jihad, dawa is proselytism, but not involving only spiritual elements — for Islam is not merely a religion, and spiritual elements are just a small part of its doctrine. In truth, Islam is a comprehensive political, social, and economic system with its own authoritarian legal framework, sharia, which aspires to govern all aspects of life.

Oh Canada

... tossing Afghan women to the wolves:

The reconciliation process led by the Karzai regime to re-integrate violent Taliban members, or "angry brothers", into the political process, is already causing fear, distrust and injustice for the most vulnerable members of the population: women.

The process has delivered nothing positive in return for what seems like a large-scale surrender of Afghans' hard-won civil rights. Atrocious leadership by the government and a cowardly unwillingness by the international community to hold them to account is the cause of this debacle.

America Awakening

Warning: Guano Storm

In the Mail

Dave writes:

I know Atlantic City well from having gone there a lot in my youth for the beaches and Boardwalk. Today, Atlantic City two blocks off the beach and Boardwalk looks like a very bad case of urban decline. Over the years since casino legalization in the late 80's, almost all the tax money the casinos have generated since their legalization has been sucked out of Atlantic City by Democrat governors and Democrat-controlled State Legislature, instead of being used as the Democrats originally promised, to fund urban renewal in Atlantic City. It was supposed to have a casino-tax-funded renaissance to revitalize and make it a travel destination with all sorts of attractions, as Las Vegas has done.

This'll be another fight for Gov. Christie and the Republicans, as they'll be cutting off the cash cow for Democrat-favored institutions and projects. No more Atlantic City-funded pork for Democrats to buy loyalty and mutual support all over New Jersey! Quelle horreur!

AND, this is a really interesting political case study for principled conservatives taking office and dealing in a principled conservative manner to correct the train-wreck caused by a couple of decades of liberal misrule and also to reform the corrupted institutions of government that have been bent to serve the liberals (of course, the Democrat Party in this case) hold on power and furtherance of leftist collectivism, rather than for the benefit of We the People of New Jersey.

If Criminals Could Pick Their Own Jury

... in the never never land of the UN and Global Warming; they do:

After Climategate and Glaciergate the UN (Mr. Ban Ki-Moon) and IPCC (R.Pachauri) have selected, who should investigate them. I wonder who Al Capone would have appointed to investigate him, if he had the chance, and what the results would have been? Probably similar.

Ban and Rajendra chose the InterAcademy Council and the InterAcademy Council established a 12 member investigation panel. The investigating panel is an interesting bunch of fellas. We have already heard rumours about some of them. This is probably the first attempt to asseses them all.

The list looks like they all met at some stinking rich UN reception with plenty of caviar and expensive vintage wine. All of them are CEOs or top managers. The nobility. I did not know, that being an independent and unbiased investigator requires one to be a VIP top manager?

An Essay for the Useful Idiots

An Essay Goes Viral ... and as a result we come a little closer to fully understanding who our master "the elites" are.

I wonder though, how it is that there could be such an abundance of useful idiots ready to hand the reigns of power over to the elites. Useful idiots, so trusting of the wisdom passed down by the elites that they are incapable, ever, of correctly interpreting facts that disprove the statist fantasy.

I was thinking about this phenomenon, when I remembered an old video clip I'd posted a number of years back. The content of the video dealt with another era, one that had culminated with the Reagan Revolution ... but it dawned on me that although the Marxists and Socialists who had tried so hard to destroy our way of life were gone, their spawn was alive and well ... living among us ... and fed constantly by an army of useful idiots.

Find below the last two parts of a fantastic 9 part interview, and while you listen, think about today's useful idiots:

UN Comedy

Rudd:

But Mr Rudd reaffirmed he intends to serve a full term if elected in Griffith, saying any role with the UN would only be part time.

"The UN Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon) telephoned Mr Rudd a couple of weeks ago and among other matters raised the possibility of Mr Rudd of being appointed to a United National panel which might look at a number of issues related to development," a statement from his office said.

"When in New York last week, Mr Rudd met with the UN Secretary-General who explained that such a panel may comprise of a significant number of former and current heads of government, prime ministers and ministers from developing and developed countries.''

Conspiracy

Daniel Levy of the Century Foundation noted that Obama’s “non-official campaign” would need to work hard to discredit Palin. “This seems to me like an occasion when the non-official campaign has a big role to play in defining Palin, shaping the terms of the conversation and saying things that the official [Obama] campaign shouldn’t say – very hard-hitting stuff, including some of the things that people have been noting here – scare people about having this woefully inexperienced, no foreign policy/national security/right-wing christia wing-nut a heartbeat away …… bang away at McCain’s age making this unusually significant …. I think people should be replicating some of the not-so-pleasant viral email campaigns that were used against [Obama].”

How to Kill a Recovery

Many voters are looking forward to 2011, hoping a new Congress will put the country back on the right track. But unless something's done soon, the new year will also come with a raft of tax hikes — including a return of the death tax — that will be real killers.

Leftwing Journalist Conspiracy

If you ever had doubts that a massive media bias in favour of the left exists, doubt no more:
Now, after learning I'd been targeted for a smear attack by a member of an online clique of liberal journalists, I'm inclined to amend my response. Not to say there's a media conspiracy, but at least to note that hundreds of journalists have gotten together, on an online listserv called JournoList, to promote liberalism and liberal politicians at the expense of traditional journalism.
It should be stunning news that scores of journalists would dare violate the public trust by forming a secretive organization to push a specific political agenda, and that they would push that agenda using skulduggery and dishonesty ... yet for those of us on the right side of the aisle, it comes as no surprise. What is stunning though, is that our opposites on the left side of the aisle see absolutely nothing wrong and some even defend or poo poo the journolist revalations.

13 Year Old Shows Up Canadian Parliament

13 year old:
A 13-year old young lady from Vancouver has helped raise $300,000 so that girls can go to school in Afghanistan. This is simply incredible.

Well done, Alaina Podmorow. You've done more for women's education and civil rights in a few years than most people will achieve in a lifetime.

This is what can be achieved when ordinary people do extraordinary things. Our government ought to be taking notes, here:

Ground Zero Mosque and Progressive Thought

Progressive thought: Allowing the ground zero mosque to go ahead is all about religious tolerance and what we, as a society are about.

A Reality Check: Once upon a time a "radical" group of Catholics decided to take action against Muslims. They traveled to Dubai and detonated a massive bomb that brought down the Burj Khalifa, killing over 3000 innocent civilians. The act triggered two wars, and caused massive psychological trauma to the city of Dubai.

Less than ten years later, Catholics built a large church blocks from the site where the tower used to stand ... but where nothing yet had been rebuilt.

The Truth: The building of the ground zero mosque is either:
a) A stunningly callous act which shows no sense of decency or respect.
b) A stunningly brazen act concocted by Muslim supremacists meant as a victory shrine.
The main point: In their slobbering need to appear "tolerant", progressives will embrace the intolerable.

How Bad Did BP Screw Up?

... great discussion:

This is a reply to the question in the last thread about what kind of cement was used, plus some other comments.

Its API class H, which is like regular cement but manufactured to higher standards.

Haven't seen an additive list for this job, but nitrogen was added for sure to bring the density down a bit and I fully expect to see some retarder in there too. With a bottom hole temp over 200*F cement sets VERY quickly with no retarder...

I was very surprised at the poor design of the cement job. Seems like this was business as usual though, and I guess that trend has been creeping in for years. Cementing offshore, or indeed onshore is far from the precise analytical process Halliburton and others would like you to believe.

Anchoring a string of production casing with a 50bbl cement job at this depth, and expecting a good seal around a 7"/9 7/8" tapered string is begging for problems. Wiper plugs simply don't work as well in tapered strings and so the risk of contaminating the cement job with drilling mud is much higher.

It can easily take 50bbls of mix water just to get the slurry completely stable and up to spec if the system or cementer is having a bad day. To get around that, pump big cement jobs. Use additives to tailor the weight and other characteristics to the job, but pump LOTS of cement. This also helps to mitigate some of the channeling issues Halliburton identified in their elegant, analytical, theoretical modeling tool.

Afghan Women Fear the Return

... of the barbarians.

Women in Taliban-held areas of Afghanistan say they are once again being threatened, attacked and forced out of jobs and education as fears rise that their rights will be sacrificed as part of any deal with insurgents to end the war in Afghanistan.

Women have reported attacks and received letters warning of violence if they continue to work or even contact radio stations to request songs.

One female teacher at a girls' school in a southern Afghan province received a letter saying: "We warn you to leave your job as a teacher as soon as possible otherwise we will cut off the heads of your children and will set fire to your daughter."
... today Canadian soldiers still offer protection where they can, but since Canada's parliament, and PM Harper, have decided that Quebec votes are more important, we will be abandoning Afghans in short order.

Adapt or Die

A warning to the ... GOP:
It’s time for the “professionals” and the elites in charge to understand that the rules of the game have changed profoundly. The reasons for the changes are complicated, but certainly Obama’s disasters have had a huge impact on politics at all levels.

Here's the thing, guys. First, stop whining. It's time to learn to get along with Sarah and her Momma Grizzlies (soccer moms, like Newt, are soo 1990s). Not Good

Well Integrity?

A White House spokesman says BP's ruptured oil well is leaking at the top, along with seepage about two miles away.

Robert Gibbs also says officials are monitoring bubbles that can be seen on an underwater camera.

Leaks could mean the cap on the well has to be opened to prevent oil and gas from escaping elsewhere.

The mechanical cap on the well stopped the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday.

Climate Fascism

Do you still doubt it? (Alternate Link)

People who are sceptical of climate change could soon be facing criminal charges in the European Court of Justice, British National Party leader and MEP Nick Griffin has said.

Speaking in an exclusive Radio Red, White and Blue interview on this week’s “Eurofile” report, Mr Griffin told interviewer John Walker about a recent sitting of the European Parliament’s subcommittee dealing with the matter, which had passed a ruling which in effect placed legal sanction against anyone who dared question the origin, cause or effect of “climate change.”

Mr Griffin revealed how he could not get a straight answer out of the committee while it was in session, but that afterwards it was admitted to him that that intention of the rule was to criminalise dissension on the topic of “climate change.”

Could the Physics of Greenhouse be Wrong?

Cracks are beginning to show:
The data negate increase in CO2 in the atmosphere as a hypothetical cause for the apparently observed global warming. A hypothesis of significant positive feedback by water vapor effect on atmospheric infrared absorption is also negated by the observed measurements. Apparently major revision of the physics underlying the greenhouse effect is needed.
... perhaps there is a reason why IPCC models don't work well, if at all ... the physics may be wrong.

It all reminds me of the flu "bacteria", which for decades was believed to exist and where most research seemed to prove it out. Of course, we now know that flu is a virus; but all evidence at one time pointed to it being a bacteria. Even the "big bang" has evolved from previous and now defunct theories ... one can go on, but suffice it to say that the hubris oozing from warmists may be little more than the foolish pride that comes before the fall.

Because science always wins, only time with tell.

By itself, this story is absurd, and even comical. If nothing else, at least it's not public money for a change, unlike the squat toilet recently installed for the use of inmates at Canterbury Prison. But it is most noteworthy, of course, as part of a larger trend of self-congratulating, self-righteous, politically correct pandering to Muslims, and to the exclusion of other groups.

One would be remiss not to consider one other matter. Muhammad prescribed the use of an odd number of stones with which to clean up. If the mall is taking the extraordinary step of installing a culturally correct loo, will stones be complimentary, or will there be a Bring-Your-Own-Stones policy? Or would considering that still be too absurd?

... another reason to hold the progressive class in disdain.

It's Not Politics; It's Science

Welcome to the ISPP

... the transnationals never give up:

UN states have proposed a new body, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, to advise on valuing nature and conservation targets.

An early priority should be measurement, said Pavan Sukhdev, study leader for The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity UN initiative, which published a business and biodiversity report this week.

"For a country to say 'let's increase biodiversity', it's quite difficult because it's not measuring biodiversity," Sukhdev said.

How to Heat a Planet

... use sloppy methodology:

Answer; It appears to be both. They slide the warmer Hadl/Reyn SST data into the places where it would go undetected if you didn’t break the grid points down to a very detailed level. But I did. I only looked at the 250 Km smoothing, not the 1200, but it seems pretty plain that gridpoints that report a merged land/ocean anomaly are calculated from the warmer Hadl/Reyn SST from 1982 on:

BS

Government of the Elite

... for the elite ... but as yet, by the people:
Professional prominence or position will not secure a place in the class any more than mere money. In fact, it is possible to be an official of a major corporation or a member of the U.S. Supreme Court (just ask Justice Clarence Thomas), or even president (Ronald Reagan), and not be taken seriously by the ruling class. Like a fraternity, this class requires above all comity -- being in with the right people, giving the required signs that one is on the right side, and joining in despising the Outs. Once an official or professional shows that he shares the manners, the tastes, the interests of the class, gives lip service to its ideals and shibboleths, and is willing to accommodate the interests of its senior members, he can move profitably among our establishment's parts.
Never before, have so many, given so much, for so few.
... the discussion.

BP Well Integrity

So far so good:

Kent Wells, a BP PLC vice-president, said engineers glued to an array of pressure, temperature, sonar and other sensors were seeing no evidence of oil escaping into the water or the sea floor. Undersea robots were also patrolling the well site for signs of trouble.

A new breach underground was a major concern going into the test, because oil breaking out of pipes in the bedrock would be harder to control and could endanger plans for a permanent plug.

"We're feeling more comfortable," Wells said on a morning conference call, but cautioned: "The test is not over."

BP Spill: Fingers Crossed

Flow stopped, but what about well integrity?
Part of the problem, apparently, is that the well pressure has not reached the 8 - 9,000 psi level that it was hoped it would reach, but instead it is reported to have fallen slightly shy of 7,000 psi. While this is below the expectation, it is higher than the 6,000 psi that Admiral Allen had set as the target below which they would assume a loss in integrity, and restart the flow of oil to the surface vessels.

To try and add a little context to this, at the beginning of the leak, the pressure of the oil and gas in the rock at the bottom of the well was measured at 11,900 psi. When the oil and gas fill the well that fluid column has a certain weight that balances some of the rock pressure, and the difference should be the pressure at the top of the column (which is where the BOP and stack sit). That gives the 8 – 9,000 psi range.

If the well pressure at the BOP is measured, however, at just shy of 7,000 psi then there are two possibilities. The first is that there has been so much flow of fluid out of the well that the driving pressure of the fluid in the rock has fallen by the 1,500 psi or so that brings the pressures down to those seen.

While that is a possibility, it may be unlikely because, at the time that the Top Kill was tried and as the Admiral noted just the other day, the well pressure could not be raised above 6,000 psi as they pumped in mud, even though at one stage they stopped the flow of oil out of the well.

What this could indicate is that there is a possibility of crossflow at the bottom of the well. What this means that the oil and gas that are flowing out of the reservoir into the bottom of the well, are, under the pressure in the well, now flowing into a higher reservoir of rock, now that they can't get out of the well. Depending on where that re-injection flow is, this may, or may not, suggest that the casing has lost integrity. This is a topic that has been covered in the comments at The Oil Drum, where fdoleza has noted:

Worse than Dishing Out Guano

... is having to eat Crow:

Once again I have much to thank Anthony Watts and his millions of readers for. My inbox has been full of kind messages from people who have now had the chance to dip into my point-by-point evisceration of Associate Professor Abraham’s lengthy, unprovoked, and widely-circulated personal attack on me.

Latest news – sent to me by two readers of Anthony’s outstanding blog – is that Abraham, inferentially on orders from the Trustees of his university acting on advice from their lawyers, has (without telling me) re-recorded his entire 83-minute talk to take out the very many direct accusations of “misrepresentation”, “complete fabrication”, “sleight of hand” etc. etc. that he had hurled at me in the original version of his talk. For instance, he now seems to have appreciated his unwisdom in having accused me of having “misrepresented” the work of scientists I had not even cited in the first place.

Afghanistan: Not About a Popular Resistance

... but about foreign jihadists:

Within the past several days, the US military has begun to publicly identify the Lashkar-e-Taiba and other foreign fighters based in Pakistan, as well as a Pakistani Taliban group, as constituting direct threats to Coalition and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

In what may be a dramatic shift, the official press releases from the US-led International Security Assistance Force and other Department of Defense outlets published on US military websites are starting to mention specific links between insurgents in Afghanistan and their sponsors in Pakistan.

The shift began on July 3, when ISAF announced that it had captured a Taliban commander, a Taliban facilitator, and two fighters during a raid in the eastern province of Nangarhar. "The commander is directly linked to the Taliban emir of Khugyani district and assisted with the recent influx of Lashkar-e Taiba (LeT) insurgents into the province," ISAF stated in the press release.

1980 All Over Again

2010, meet 1980:
Imagine that. Several decades of news reports about armageddon and melting ice and after 30 years, we're exactly where we were in 1980. ;-)

Absolutely Outstanding

Best victory dance ever:

Lies Brought to You by the Makers of Earth Hour

... more WWF chicanery ... and all the more reason to turn the lights on for Earth Hour:
The Toronto Sun has picked up on the "Amazongate" story with journalist Brian Lilley reporting the response of the WWF, which says "it cannot be held responsible for how the UN climate change group used its data."

Privately, Brian tells me that the WWF was extremely reluctant to make any statement at all. He says that it "essentially tried to tell me that this is all too complex for my pretty little head", then declaring (on the record): "We tend not to make statements in contexts where there seems to be limited interest in a balanced appraisal of an issue."

The First Post-Climategate Test

... will the IPCC pass it's first big test; or simply try to revert to its old dirty way of doing politics science?
“Climate science is a matter of such global importance, that the highest standards of honesty, rigour and openness are needed in its conduct,” stated the Muir Russell report into the Climategate scandal after it found the Climatic Research Unit at the UK’s East Anglia University guilty of “a consistent pattern of failing to display the proper degree of openness.” This failure, the Russell report declared to wide agreement among climate scientists, led to harm “to the reputation of the University and, indeed, to the credibility of UK climate science.”

To ensure that climate scientists never again harm the cause of science in this way, the Russell report then recommended that scientists adhere to new standards of openness. “Without such openness, the credibility of their work will suffer because it will always be at risk of allegations of concealment and hence mal-practice.”

The Russell report was released last week. This week the UN’s Intergovernmental; Panel on Climate Change and other scientists have their first opportunity to apply the new standards by admitting to yet another gross transgression.

Climate Terror Double-Header

Greenland Melt:
The meltdown of Greenland’s ice sheet is speeding up, satellite measurements show. Data from a US space agency (Nasa) satellite show that the melting rate has accelerated since 2004. If the ice cap were to completely disappear, global sea levels would rise by 6.5m (21 feet).
Drowning Holland:
The World Cup was bad news for Holland, but that isn’t what I am talking about.

The world’s preeminent climatologist Dr. James Hansen (who is well known for quiet understatement) has forecast that Holland will drown in the next century. Looks like East Anglia is doomed too. Is that a bad thing?
... in truth, the only environmental catastrophe facing us is the giant wave of guano spewing from the AGW industry ... a wave threatening our very way of life.

Since we're into fantasy catastrophe, check this out (I don't believe a word of it) ... but it's a fun read and likely as scientifically sound as any AGW guano storm.

3 Stooges

Good Men

... like to shoot scumbags:

“These are detestable murderers and scumbags, I’ll tell you that right up front. They detest our freedoms, they detest our society, they detest our liberties,”..

“We’re not the public service of Canada, we’re not just another department. We are the Canadian Forces, and our job is to be able to kill people.”..

Private Parts

... in NJ:

State parks, psychiatric hospitals and even turnpike toll booths could also be run by private operators, according to the 57-page report on privatization obtained by The Star-Ledger. Preschool classrooms would no longer be built at public expense, state employees would pay for parking and private vendors would dish out food, deliver health care and run education programs behind prison walls.

Terms to Laugh By

Up first ... Muslim American:

The very notion of a Muslim America might seem preposterous, downright laughable, but there are people and forces identifiably working towards that end. “Islamism” is the term that describes the growing global movement of Muslims for whom the supremacy of their faith justifies every kind of deception and violence.

The New Peer Reviewed Science

... where peers are small environmental activist organizations and prizes are $60 ... billion that is:

Last week, after six months of evasions, obfuscation, denials and retractions, a story which has preoccupied this column on and off since January came to a startling conclusion. It turns out that one of the most widely publicised statements in the 2007 report of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – a claim on which tens of billions of dollars could hang – was not based on peer-reviewed science, as repeatedly claimed, but originated solely from anonymous propaganda published on the website of a small Brazilian environmental advocacy group.

The Never Ending Temperature Travesty

Can science this sloppy be trusted to declare ... "warmest year ever!"?
The point of all this is that this station has the following problems:
■Poor siting – building proximity
■Station move
■Sensor change from Mercury/Stevenson Screen to MMTS
■A nearby dynamic industrial environment with rapidly changing infrastructure and albedo as shown by aerial maps
■Missing/incomplete observer data over a long period, likely due to observer not recording data on weekends, holidays, vacation days, sick days.
■Incorrect/conflicting metadata at NCDC
■post facto adjustments to infill missing/incomplete observer data

Market Hyperbole?

... or the coming of the next market meltdown:

The plot continues to thicken at Germany’s constitutional court, a body with power of life or death over Europe’s monetary union.

Contrary to general belief, Germany’s eurosceptic professors have not abandoned their legal efforts to block the EU rescues for European banks exposed to Greek debt, and since May 7 for banks exposed to debt from Spain, Portugal, and Ireland as well.

Should they succeed, of course, the eurozone risks disintegration within days, and perhaps hours. I am not sure that investors in New York, London, Tokyo, Beijing, or indeed Frankfurt quite understand this.

There are now four cases at the court – or Verfassungsgericht – arguing that these disguised bank bail-outs breach multiple clauses of EU treaty law, and therefore breach Germany’s supreme and sovereign Basic Law.

Progressive Snark versus Palin Positive

Alinsky is failing ... while Palin rides the wave.

The biggest mistake the progressives can commit is to underestimate this woman.

Global Warming Ontario Heat

Believe it, because he's an EXPERT:
Canadians should expect more extreme weather like the current heat wave baking southern Ontario and Quebec in the future because of climate change, a leading climatology professor says.

"My strong opinion is that these kinds of extremes are something you would expect in a warming world, and expect to happen more frequently," Harry McCaughey, a professor of climatology at Queen's University, told CTV.ca.
... I suppose that the dreaded Global Warming Ontario Heatwave is much like the dreaded Global Warming Prairie Droughts that all the "experts" predicted.

The New NASA in Pictures

Fixing the Financial Sector

One vagina and melanin cell at a time:

I was searching the bill for a provision about derivatives. What did I find but Section 342, which declares that race and gender employment ratios, if not quotas, must be observed by private financial institutions that do business with the government. In a major power grab, the new law inserts race and gender quotas into America's financial industry.

In addition to this bill's well-publicized plans to establish over a dozen new financial regulatory offices, Section 342 sets up at least 20 Offices of Minority and Women Inclusion. This has had no coverage by the news media and has large implications.

The Treasury, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the 12 Federal Reserve regional banks, the Board of Governors of the Fed, the National Credit Union Administration, the Comptroller of the Currency, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau...all would get their own Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.

The Essay

The Climategate Enquiries

Quote that says it all:

The investigations thus far are much like having a trial with judge, jury, reporters, spectators, and defendant, but no plaintiff. The plaintiff is locked outside the courtroom sitting in the hall hollering and hoping the jury hears some of what he has to say. Is it any wonder the verdicts keep coming up “not guilty”? – Anthony Watts
... and a clear picture of how utterly corrupted the entire global warming industry is.

Arctic Ice and AGW

It seems like long ago now that warmists were moaning about the up and coming "ice-free" arctic. Soooo long ago:
stevengoddard says:
June 28, 2010 at 10:16 pm
In three days, the slope of the Arctic extent graph will begin to drop off.

Mark it on your calendar.
Anyone who doubts the correctness of the PIPS based methodology I have been using, should take a look for themselves.
... in fairness though, it needs to be said that melting arctic ice has more to do with wind, than with a warming or cooling planet.

Shocking the Warmists

I predict that the alarm spewing from the IPCC and its feeder system are about to get turned down a notch ... why? ... because the new normal is going to be transparancy and of course with that, far less ability to dupe the public with crap science:
“The Commissioner’s considers that it is not necessary for information to have a direct effect on the environment for it to fall within the definition in the EIR, only that it needs to be linked to a relevant subsection in regulation 2(1). He is of the view that the phrase “any information…on…” contained in regulation 2(1) should be interpreted widely and in line with the purpose expressed in the first recital of the Council Directive 2003/4/EC which the EIR enact.”

[...]

“The complainant made an allegation that an offence under regulation 19 of the EIR had been committed. Although the emails referred to above indicated prime facie evidence of an offence, the Commissioner was unable to investigate because six months had passed since the potential offence was committed, a constraint placed on the legislation by the Magistrates Court Act 1980.”

Call to Prayer

Story

... certainly beats stoning mothers for adultery.

Muir Russel

Pielke Jr.:
The Muir Russel Review is out (here in PDF), and it has plenty in it for everyone on all sids of the debate over the East Anglia emails to crow about and to complain about. It has some strong rebukes of the scientists involved in the emails and dismisses many, but accepts some, of the criticisms raised by their strongest critics.
EUR:
Nor indeed can it. As Russell is quick to point out, "It is important to note that we offer no opinion on the validity of their scientific work. Such an outcome could only come through the normal processes of scientific debate and not from the examination of e-mails or from a series of interviews about conduct."
CA:
I guess the main question coming out of the Muir Russell report is when is he going to be appointed to the House of Lords and his choice of appelation. Lord Muir of Holyrood?

Barbarians

... and so purely Islamic:

Sajjad Mohammedie Ashtiani travels to a Tabriz jail in Iran every Monday to see his mother.

And for 15 minutes each week, he speaks to his mother, Sakine Mohammedie Ashtiani, through the prison glass that divides them.

Neither mother nor son ever know if the visit will be their last.

Convicted of adultery in 2006, Ashtiani has been sentenced to be stoned to death for her alleged crime.

Originally sentenced to 99 lashes for her alleged "illicit relationship outside of marriage," Ashtiani endured that punishment in front of her then 17-year-old son.

"The authorities asked if I wanted to wait outside. I said no. I could not leave my mother alone."

Sajjad says it is a day he will never forget. But, he says, that day he thought the worst was over.

"I was thinking, OK, they hit her, now it's finished. They told me this process was finished. She's done. She's free to go. "

But then a judges' panel in Tabriz suspected Ashtiani of being involved in her husband's murder and re-opened her case.

She was cleared of the murder charges, but the panel re-examined Ashtiani's adultery sentence, and based on unspecified "judges' knowledge," decided she should be put to death for the alleged affair.

Here Come the Chinese

Nobody said they were stupid:
Energy-hungry China, once stung in its efforts to secure access to resources in North America, is making a more subtle push into Canada's oil sands, and the new approach is paying off, experts say.

Chinese firms seeking a toehold in the largest known crude deposit outside the Middle East have opted for joint ventures and partial stakes to avoid the kind of political uproar sparked when CNOOC tried to take over US oil group Unocal in 2005.

"They are tiptoeing around the edge, not challenging anybody, not getting in any American Senators' faces -- just very quietly taking a position," said David Hewitt, regional head of oil and gas research at CLSA in Hong Kong.

"You haven't seen an aggressive attempt to buy whole companies, to own management or have dominant control."
... more not stupid.

... and in other oily news, green heads on pension explode.

The Green Game Changer

It's funny watching and listening to the bravado on sites like Real Climate ... and the polemics coming from the green bots on the blogs ... but no matter, the Climategate fallout has been brutal for warmists ... and it'll only get worse as they are forced to open up their research to genuine scrutiny. Expect greens to become more shrill (if that's possible) ... but enjoy it, as it's a sign of desperation:

Science has been changed forever by the so-called "climategate" saga, leading researchers have said ahead of publication of an inquiry into the affair – and mostly it has been changed for the better.

This Wednesday sees the publication of the Muir Russell report into the conduct of scientists from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU), whose emails caused a furore in November after they were hacked into and published online.

Critics say the emails reveal evasion of freedom of information law, secret deals done during the writing of reports for the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a cover-up of uncertainties in key research findings and the misuse of scientific peer review to silence critics.

Next Gen Infantry Rifles

Anthony G Williams:
The conflict in Afghanistan, with its emphasis on targeting specific enemy individuals while avoiding collateral damage, demands the use of weapons of high precision and limited destructive effect. As a result, infantry small arms have a much more prominent role than that expected in conventional high-intensity warfare and this is highlighting the performance of their ammunition to a greater extent than ever before. Now that several NATO nations have started the process of defining their requirements for the next generation of small arms, this is a rare opportunity to ask the question: is the present combination of 5.56 and 7.62 mm rifle and machine gun cartridges optimal, or could we do better in the next generation?

The British Army has analysed several hundred small-arms engagements in Afghanistan over the past few years. The results are thought-provoking. Ever since World War 2, around 300 metres has been regarded as the normal maximum range for small-arms engagements. However, the Taliban are equipped with PKM light machine guns and SVD rifles chambered in the old but powerful 7.62x54R Russian cartridge, and more than half of their attacks are launched from ranges of between 300 and 900 metres. These issues are discussed in more detail in THIS report by Nicholas Drummond and myself.

Peaceful Majority Doing it Right

More please:

Muslims pay tribute to armed forces in Afghanistan

A group of Muslim women have laid a wreath at the National Memorial Arboretum in honour of those who died fighting for the UK in Afghanistan.

L/Cpl Jabron Hashmi, 24, from Bordesley Green, Birmingham, was the first British Muslim soldier to die in a Taliban attack in Helmand in July 2006.

On the anniversary weekend of his death four Muslim women paid their respects at the Staffordshire centre.

Will 2010 Be a Record Breaker?

Not Likely:

That means that the predicted difference is 1.12 standard deviations (0.073/0.065). Use the error function, or (approximately) this graph,to see that the probability that 2010 will still end up being warmer than 1998, according to UAH AMSU, is about 13 percent; the formula in Mathematica is (1 + Erf[-1.12/Sqrt[2]])/2. The odds are about 6-to-1 that 2010 will stay cooler than 1998.

Switching topics ... we've been given a chance to check out a hypothethis:
As we march forward to the impending TOP RED WARNING of a "Solar Climate Change" for the period 10-12 July (give or take a day each way) from Piers Corbyn at WeatherAction, I will try to use the UK update from the Met Office to show this change. The period, be it only a few days away, will not only be part of the Piers Corbyn forecast for the UK, it will ALSO be part of a complex world weather event, that could include Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions, Floods, Storms and Major Tornadoes. These changes ARE predictable and can be produced by Piers Corbyn months in advance and have NOTHING to do with CO2.

Saskatchewan Funnels

We've been having some big storms lately, with the last one causing extensive flooding damage in Saskatoon. I've been out and about trying to capture tornado pics, but so far the one brief tornado that I saw north of Colonsay had me caught in heavy traffic. By the time I pulled over, it was gone.

Nevertheless, there have been lots of funnel clouds threatening to touch down, and some exciting moments.

Image 1: Funnel cloud forms just West of Whitecap. This storm later deluged Saskatoon with the greatest storm dump of water in 30 years.

Image 2: Wall cloud formed by Colonsay. Enviroment Canada had tornado warnings going and I was sure this one was going to extend down as it was very well formed and spinning like a top in the central portion, but nothing touched down.

Image 3: Rapidly rotating funnels spun around a wall cloud, but never touched down. The way they are pulling backwards suggests they are weakening. This was just outside Elstow.

Image 4: An area of intense inflow on the trailing edge of the storm, spinning like crazy in a "clock wize" direction. No danger of touch down, but fun to watch.

Image 5: What a powerful storm looks like (rain-free base), as it's gathering steam. You can't see it in the pic, but it's raining and hailing out the front of this thing, and with every minute the base is descending lower next to the outflow (outside view to the right). This is the early stage of the storm that hit Saskatoon.
