"But then, there is the "progressive" class ... that aimless mass of Western humanity so burdened by cultural self-loathing that it is to Islam, as ungulates are to lions."
You can tell that the British still teach the art of oration, or at least some of their folks still are smart enough to use oratory to make a point. Bravo!
Do you think Germany wouldn't dominate Europe if there was no EU? I think it was Michelet who said 'Britain is an island.' One of the central goals of the EU project was to keep as tight hold on Germany as possible, and it was alot more important for France and the Low Countries. The Channel allows Britain breathing room the rest of Europe doesn't have. I also think there is plenty of blame to go around for the current EU tribulations, and to focus your blame on progressives is just another case of your ideological blinkers on maximum - if the welfare state is such an awful thing, why has it done so well for 2 full genrations and more? I do think the Welfare state needs to be pulled back somewhat, and the elites do need to be alot more democratically accountable. Perhaps we can think of the current EU constitution as akin to the Articles of Confederation, and now it is time for a real effort at an enduring constitution, but one that all the countries, through their voters, ultimately decide upon.
Tom, In Western Europe (including the UK) there is no North American equivalent of "conservative". They are all "Progressives" who range from Liberal Democrats on the Right who would be closely aligned with Canada's LPC, to outright Marxists. The voters have very little choice as the elites are all Big Gov. politicos of the "Progressive/Socialist/Transnational persuasion. Political movements that are more close to our North American Conservative movements are called "far right" ... or even fascist by the establishment media and elites.
The result is that the various peoples have no place to turn and the resulting alienation from the whole political process is a set up for upheaval.
I would prefer to think of them as elites of the elite persuasion. There are certainly rightwing parties in western Europe, like the BNP in England and the FNP in France but they have little voter support. In a democracy there are always ways pressuring parties to support your views - public opinion is always a force. Neoliberalism has very little presence in Europe. There alienated from the elites but they still want the welfare state. In places like Greece, with it's appalling corruption, they are getting what they deserved but helping to drag the rest of Europe down with them
They are "ALL" getting what they deserve; including Germany. I'll insert my comment below from another thread.
Germany and wealthier Eurzone nations want to run Europe because the Euro is devalued by about 40% compared to where it should be if it were tied to the German economy. This single fact alone makes Germany the number 2 export powerhouse on the planet. But ... Germany cheats to get that status by tying its economy to all those little rat holes like Greece. It allows the Germans to run a vast welfare state, while paying for it with grossly under priced exports. Nobody except the Chinese can compete with the Germans ... but both get their status by manipulating currency.
The Greeks and other little states got massive amounts of German and French bribery cash to run their little socialist schemes ... and Germany and France got to export to the world via an undervalued currency and thereby keep their welfare states alive.
If Germany can't extend herself into the affairs of the little states, to co-opt them, then Germany and France are done like dinner because in Germany's case its exports will increase in value by about 40% if the Eurozone fails (CNBC) ... and that, will be the end of the great German welfare state.
The entire structure is dirty ... has run out of money ... and Germany's Imperialistic moves are now a matter of survival. They are all joined at the hip ... Germany needs the little rats to keep the Euro low ... the little rats need Germany to stay solvent.
The Big lie is that Germany somehow gets it's number 2 exporter status because of efficiency ... when in fact it's because the Euro is grossly undervalued in terms of the German economy.
I think that fat balding mofo who was making faces and laughing - is going to be the face of what is in store for Europe in the days ahead. Keep laughing, you fat dolts. I say that when they start WW3 we just let the place burn this time.
